Question How to pick?

I am finding myself confused as to what fraternity to join. At first glance, they basically seem the same. Besides what a few friends of mine have told me, I don't know what to do. If anyone could help inform me regarding the Frat chapters at SFASU, please do.

The best thing to do is to not listen to anyone's opinion. Go out, meet guys in the fraternities, and make up your own mind.

My Rho Chi skillz come into play! w00t.

1) What group of guys could you see yourself calling BROTHER?
2) Who could you swear allegiance to for the rest of your life? Remember, you're pledging a lifetime of loyalty.
3) When all else fails, make a pro/con list..what are the pros and cons of each group?

Ask questons - meet the brothers (and any people already pledged) - look at their scrapbook if they have one - and I think ignore "friends" unless they really know and/or are members. It's time for you to make a decision.

Your mommy no longer picks out your underwear - you do.

You must decide.

Cool

hossier, when I first read this, I am going picking Your nose, Your Rear, or The People and ideals that You as a Newbie feel most comfortable with.

Cannot pick Your Relatives, LOL!

To noblejr. Friends are Great, but do a little digging and try to find which Group of People you feel most comfortable with. What does thier web site say. What do you read on GC about Greek Letter Organizations, problems or other wise.

The Men that you are maybe going to Associate With will be the ones who if like Me are going to be the ones that you will spend either 4 Years or a life time with.

Good Luck, if you need to give me a hollor, just PM ME!

All of us are here to be of service if We can.

i just want to ditto the whole 'forget what everyone else says' --

my Lambda Chi chapter has had its fair share of people talking shit about us for various reasons including

1. we don't haze

2. we are pretty diverse. majority is still white but we are the only IFC fraternity that has as many hispanic, asian, and black brothers in the numbers that we have. we also are pretty diverse in terms other than race, we have -- conservatives, liberals, ultra fratty types, non fratty people, big city kids, small town kids etc, yet we are all really cool with each other. alot of the other fraternities here are devoted to that southern ultra fratty lifestyle, and the equate our diversity with 'trying to fill quotas'

3. we're the largest fraternity on campus which in trash talkers terms means 'we let in anyone'

even i bought into alot of those rumors and trash talk when i was nongreek which lead me to rushing 2 other fraternities which turned out to not really be what i was looking for even though they were the 'it' fraternities of the time.

well i finally decided to rush LCA bc i was a legacy and i had met a couple of them and they were pretty cool guys. i still had the trash talk in the back of my mind, but i was trying to forget it bc the guys that rushed me were so cool.

well i associated LCA about a month ago and its been one of the best decisions i've ever made. now that i'm on the inside of lambda chi i can defend my fraternity and clear up some of the rumours about us

1. we don't haze -- why would you want to alienate your pledges away from the rest of the fraternity, isn't it sposed to be all about brothehood? ok, yeah, you can hit me, now lets be friends. that just doesn't work for me

2. we are diverse -- anyone that thinks minorities don't belong in IFC fraternities is racist. period, end of sentence. brotherhood transcends race, economic status, political views etc.

3. we're the largest chapter on campus -- yes, it's true we have big pledge classes, and we have the largest fraternity on campus. but thats because we're so badass and everyone wants to be in LCA because our brotherhood is so tight. also, keep in mind that 100% of our pledges initiate at the end of the pledge period, and the frats that talk shit about us usually get half to 3/4 of their pledge classes to initiate. we are probably the most expensive fraternity on campus too in terms of dues, so the fact that guys STILL want to stay in, says alot about our brotherhood. we are #2 in grades, have the biggest house (and its on sorority row), and the hot sororities always hitup our parties. i don't think that constitutes 'we let anyone in'. i think its pure jealousy

so the moral of the story is to ignore what everyone says and go where you feel the most comfortable. things should just feel right. for me the biggest signals were the fact that i didn't feel like i was trying to impress everyone or had to pretend to be some one else. it wasn't stressful at all when i went to the LCA rush events and i wasn't nervous. it felt like it was the missing piece to the puzzle.

keep these things in mind, and have an awesome rush!

Join the fraternity that you have brothers in already. I was sick during most of rush freshman year with pneumonia. The only person that offered to help me at all with telling my professors why I wasn't in class for a month, and basically visiting me more than once were Rob and Colin. Colin pledged that sememester (Spring '01) and Rob and I are pledge brothers, joining the next semester.

Colin and Rob are also two of the first people I met, the first two friends that I made, and they lived in the dorm with me, at Radford. That made choicing which one to join pretty easy.

That being said, I say, if you only get one bid go with that or...

this post is way to long sorry

Say "I am a [insert fraterinity name]" outloud. Think of the brothers of that chapter. Do you want to be one of their brothers, or are your brothers different in some way. Do this for each chapter. Looking in a mirror helps, this is the way I did it, although as I've said before, choicing wasn't that hard for me. Spelling is.

If all else fail, join Theta Chi.

Not a shameless plug at all, eh? But good advice before that!

OK, I'll take a shot. Here's what to do:
1) I think there are 9 fraternities at SFASU. Eliminate five of them immediately. It doesn't matter what criteria you use; you'll instinctively make the right decisions. You know there are some places you don't want to end up or houses where you don't belong. Maybe they're bad fraternities, or struggling chapters, or maybe you just don't fit. Cross 'em off.
2) That leaves four, a workable number. Ask yourself why you like each of these four. Chances are you like one because the older members impressed you. Keep in mind they'll graduate soon. Is there one where you feel comfortable? Is there one where you've come to know and like some of the younger members? In the end, you're better off going with the house where the guys are most like you. It's not politically correct, but it's the best bet.
