GA Tech IFC radio public service announcement

I awoke this morning, hearing a radio public service announcement about Fraternities at GA Tech.

A female voice, identified as a "GA Tech administrator" said something like "We're very proud of our fraternties at GA Tech, and again this year the all-fraternity grade average is above the all-men's average, and 20% more fraternity members graduate than non-members."

What a nice wake up.

Were you listening to WREK? My boyfriend is the program director there, and he has a show. He's also pretty active in APO.

Not WREK

Not WREK, but perhaps he could get something similar thru the IFC or dean.

I heard it on the tiny station which carries Don Imus in the morning, it's like 1280 or 1380 am.

I think it's funny that WREK's call letters could be pronounced "Wreck." There are a lot of call signs that actually have some meaning...but that's a thread for a different board.

Congratulations to whomever got the PSA on the air.

We could use a lot more of that kind of thing.

ETA, oh, I get it -- "Ramblin Wreck (WREK) from Georgia Tech."

Cute.

History

For many years, GA Tech owned and operated the city's #2 AM station, WGST (GA School of Technology). It was a full commercial station, but went all out for Tech football.

I remember one time I was listening to the end of the football game Sat. night, as I drove to a hockey game. When I came out of the game at least 2.5 hours later, they were still doing football postgame and locker room shows.

In the '70s and '80s, they began to slip, which they attributed to their control by the state board of Regents - they weren't allowed to wheel and deal with ad rates, as competitors did. The station was sold in the '80s, but still exists with the same call letters - now a Clear Channel excellent talk station.

I think the tiny FM WREK (owned by Tech) has existed for 50 years (?), and now plays music for college students, not adults.

PS: I've heard a trivia question that there are 2 or three radio stations with the call letters same as their hometown. WACO (TX) is one. Know any others?

I'm sure there are a few more -- although I don't know how many towns are 3 or 4 letters long and begin with W or K.

There are lots of abbreviations, including WATH, Athens, Ohio and WCOL, Columbus -- both of whom I've worked for the the far distant past.

Others are named after their owners. I also worked for WTMJ-TV owned by The Milwaukee Journal. WGN, Chicago means World's Greatest Newspaper (The Trib), WCFL stands for the Chicago Federation of Labor. I worked at WJBK-TV, Detroit which allegedly stood for Will Jesus Be Kind when it was first started.

Of course, a lot of these have changed ownership over time.

These lists could go on forever.
