Let's Talk About Jazz

I have Theolonious Monk, St. Germain on my rotation at work right now. I'm liking St. Germain very much right now.

Who are your favorite Jazz musicians?

Charlie Parker (I love the bird, we played the YardBird Suite in high school)
Buddy Rich (Channel One Suite.......DAAAAAAAAAAAAMN)
Count Basie: His big band stuff is awesome, and his soft stuff is very soothing.
Bill Watrous: If you've ever played Tiger of San Pedro, and heard a drum break like the one it has.....
Chick/Chuck Corea: Ah, Spain. Chick's stuff is very good too.
Charles Mingus: Hey, I was a bass player....no one could do it better than Mingus.

ETA:
KENNY G IS NOT JAZZ!

St. Germain isn't exactly jazz though...at best you can call it house jazz, if even.

I LOVE jazz! Mainly the old school stuff, and the roots of jazz (like impressionism, early americana, etc.), but I do like some modern jazz. I like:

Satie
Gershwin
Benny Goodman
Ella Fitzgerald
Chick Corea
Dave Brubeck
Duke Ellington (I adore Ivie Anderson's voice!)
John Coltrane
Count Basie
Harry Connick, Jr.

...to name a few. Obviously, I'm more into the older stuff as opposed to the newer stuff.

Great topic!

Very good topic

I'm blessed being in Southern California. Got two great jazz stations:

www.kkjz.org/music
www.ksds-fm.org

And a grip of CDs. I bought tons of them when I was living in Las Vegas and the "jazz station" played too much contemporary/smooth stuff for my taste.

Favorite musicians:
Miles Davis, particularly with Gil Evans and the orchestra.
John Coltrane.
Buddy Collette (love jazz flute).
Stan Kenton.
Oliver Nelson.
Wes Montgomery.

In terms of style...love bop, hard bop, West Coast jazz and soul jazz.

Now I'm listening to Garaj Mahal. If any of you got a high speed internet, you can download a lot of their shows at this site.

ETA: Krazy, you can also download some Stanton Moore show here

It is all completely legal.

Great List. I would like to add Stan Getz ans Clarence Williams.

Jazz is kinda a broad category in my opinion...There's a local band in Oxford called Stoneface Jazz that are pretty good. And a more modern jazz--Diana Krall.

The Vandermark Five -- fabulous!

There is an amazing jazz station in Denver -- KUVO.

Hard to find REALLY good jazz around here.

Nothing more irritating than a bunch of stoners thinking they are
making jazz history.

Picked up a collection (4 CDs) and love it, but it's the original recordings. The sound quality detracts.

I know of what I speak! Used to be in a band so hung around musicians!

Let me rephrase-Nothing is more irritating than HANGING AROUND some bunch of amateur stoners who think they are making musical history!

Better?
edited-hmmmmm-still can't make it sound like I want it to!

Brubeck, Coltrane, Monk...I'm not that deep into it right now.

I will be able to make it to Newport Jazz to see Brubeck and Connick, Jr. Woot!

Hey! That's almost what I was going to post. Stop preceding me.

I also love Miles.

More than anything, I am so looking forward to the collaboration of Kenny G and Britney Spears covering old Ella tunes.
