Working Over Older Employees

All,
How do you deal with directing folk who are older than you (sometimes 20-30 years older) in getting tasks done for you? How do you deal with an assistant who may be a tad on the lazy side (my perception, which may or may not be accurate)?

I am an atty so we have assistants (secretaries) but I often do not feel comfortable giving my assistant assignments b/c she is older than me. I often feel as if I am wrong for telling her to do anything for me.

Has anyone experienced this? How do you handle it? What is your mentality wrt this?

It's their job and they are probably used to it. Just treat them with respect.

I feel you. I have a technician that reports to me who joined the company when I was in diapers. I find it hard to give him certain directions since he has become cynical over the years.

Thanks, Lady Greek; I will keep that in mind. Any other advice on how to address this issue?

Although I am not a corporate person, I have had to teach several older people in my field...

They were my best students... Quick to grasp concepts I explained to them, ready and willing to do the task at hand...

I think that with elders, as long as you are direct and consistent, they respect that, in fact they beg for it... And if you are mindful and respectful, then you find an ally on your side when it comes down to the wire...

And sometimes, you have to ask them about their expectations of you... Often, they know who's boss, but they also know ins and outs that you haven't had enough experience to know (just because), and will help you get thru various experiences unscathed... And really, they see it as a triumph on their part rather than some kid bossing them around as a piece of meat.

Now if they are insubordinate just 'cuz of some politicking... Then put it out there in the open... Most old folks like that kinna play--they hate the beat around the bush... So, if you got the guts, just be honest and respectful for the most part and they will usually come clean... They will either be on your side, or not...

What an appropriate time for this thread to pop up!!! I am having tons of problems at work with this issue. Also, tie into the fact that the two I am having "issues" with are "clients" themselves (peer advocates) and have major issues with authority (one accused my supervisor and I of having an affair), makes it very difficult for me to do my job at times. I am planning to document EVERYTHING they do that is inappropriate though...........
