Lightbulb Post Initiation Education

What are your thoughts regarding post initiation education or Q&A?

I would have liked to be able to sit down and ask a few questions (in the chapter room or other secure setting) about the ceremony I had just completed. I am sure I missed a few things.

Just one person's opinion.

I think post initiation education/ Q&A is a great idea. Being a newly initiated member myself (Sunday 16th), I had questions from the ceremony. At our chapter following initiation, our president and vice president took us upstairs for Beta 101, which is all the do's and donts, as well as any questions we might have had. It helped out a lot, and I'm sure it could be useful for every chapter.

Q&A Session

That sounds like a reasonable info session. We all need to know the proper form for the chapter meetings.

We do a Beta 101 and a ParliPro presentation for our new initiates within two weeks of initiation.

I encourage you to find a way to sit down with the ritual book and just read it. Also, try to make it to Convention for the Beta 101 put on by the Archivist/Historian.

We do a "Beta 101" after each of the rituals we perform for our pledges. During my pledgship (Fall '03), they waited to cover all that material after it was completed. We have found it easier to cover each night as they progress through it. It has worked wonders for their retention of the principles, obligations, and oath. I've also read the ritual book front to back, so that helped alot as well.

Beta 101

Since I do not belong to a "real" chapter and the closest one is 2.5 hours one-way, I am limited in my time at the chapter house. They did not have Beta 101 after my initiation.

Being part of General Fraternity rolls, I dod not know if I can purchase a copy of the ritual to learn.

I hope to be at the convention this summer.

These have all been great ideas.

Hey Ed, I am pretty sure you won't be able to purchase a ritual book, they only issue them to chapters. I think the District Chief has a copy, and as a former Chapter Counselor, I can say Chapter Counselors do not have a copy - so, maybe you can call up your DC and see if he'd be available for lunch some day just to sit and talk Beta.....

Also, have you looked at being an advisor for the local chapter? That would be a great way to get involved with Beta and I am sure it would make things come together a little easier!

Hope that helps, have fun at Convention!

I plan to be in Scottsdale, AZ too (regardless if my chapter makes it through this semester or not).

Chapter Advisor

Yes, I have made it known to the DC that I want to be involved with the district that is closest to me. The DC was at my initiation. I have yet to hear back. It is time to send a tickler reminder e-mail to him.

I have also made it known that I will GLADLY assist the expansion team if they decide to come to the University of Missouri - Rolla (UMR) or Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, MO. And if there is an effort to go back Indiana State University or a group of men from ISU approach the Betas, I expect to be involved.

I hope you colony makes it. Are you strugglin in any area? Has the Advisor team given any indication that it is not going well?

We have what I would like to call "paper Advisors". We have individuals listed as "Advisors", but none of them come to meetings or events. I don't think they've ever really had a decent meeting where everyone was present or where decisions were discussed. The only person we see regularly (weekly) is our Chapter Counselor.

I'm the "Supreme Optimist" in our group, so I'm confident we will survive these latest setbacks... come what may.

Advisors

Is your chapter advisor liason sending out letters to them? The chapter should be taking the lead and at least asking the advisors to attend.

Then should there be issues in the future, the chapter can show that letters were sent asking for "help."

I like usign e-mail so I can send one back to myself and CC or BCC people higher up the chain. Havig one come back to me show when I sent it to everyone on the distribution list. Again, that is Cover My Behind action but show your are taking the initiative.

We have tried every way possible to get our advisors to attend meetings (emails, letters, face-to-face visits). It's even more difficult when the older alumni (the alumni from our 1980-1994 chapter) are in no way involved, with the exception of a small group. Now that our own chapter (re-colonized in the Fall of 2002) is producing alumni, myself included, we are stepping up and being "active" with the chapter. Hopefully I'll be able to set the standard and get the ball rolling.
