to those NOT from Pennsylvania...

...is PA considered a "hick state" to those from other states??

I received a really nasty message from some chick on MySpace today, berating me for being a member of the "Laguna Beach" group. (I LOVE the show) Well, this girl was from Laguna Beach and went on about me being a loser for obsessing about people i dont know, yadda yadda yadda...whatever. I dont care about all that, but I was wondering about the last line of her message:
"I should have known you were from a hick state like PA"

That kind of baffled me because I live 15 mins from downtown Philly and go to school in the middle of Pittsburgh so Ive never seen any "hickness"

My father lived in Philly (near LaSalle U) and there ain't nothin hick about it.

Every state has it's rural/hick areas...

Thank you. I've lived in WV for 20 years, and when I talk to people in other places about here, they most often ask about the hillbillies. However, I spent my freshman year of college in Columbus, OH, (I hate to use this sterotype, but I really can't think of anyway else to describe them) and I knew more "hicks" there than WV. Jill1228 is right, every state has it's "hick" areas.

There are hicks everywhere. I think areas that are more rural tend to be this way, and the urban and suburban ones are not. Of course people assume that Virginia is a hick state, but I live close to DC and there aren't many hicks around here.

As for PA, Mr. SSS and I stopped in a town a little south of Harrisburg for lunch one day, as we were headed to New York (yes, we went a different way than I-95) and it seemed like a hick town to me. I also work with a guy from Erie, PA and the way he describes it, it sounds like a hick town. But then I've been to other parts of PA that I would definitely not describe as such.

It sounds like that girl from Laguna Beach is very ignorant. She should step outside her little world and get a clue.

I'm from PA. I grew up near Harrisburg, went to school in Lock Haven, and now live in West Chester.

I'm proud of my state. If someone said it's a hick state, then they don't know anything about it.

That girl from Laguna Beach needs to step outside the beach for a reality check.

That's because of all of the folks from WV who come to school there. In WV, they teach the "three R's", Readin'/Ritin'/and Route 33 (the road from Huntington to Columbus.

Just kidding. It's really true that there are "hicks" in every state, and that's particularly true because of the US society being so mobile.

My late Mom used to love to describe herself as a Southern Ohio born "hillbilly."

I've never thought of it as such. When I think of PA, two things come to mind - the steel towns and main line Philadelphia society.

The reason they teach you the "Three R's" is because there are no jobs in WV. In my major, the class I'm with, when we all graduate together, We'll all probably leave the state.

My sister goes to school in Southern Ohio. I feel really bad for her.

Not all of Southern Ohio is that bad-the closer they are to Cincinnati the better! Northern KY/Cinci area is generally pretty good about being absent of the hicks you'll see elsewhere!

One of my best friends lives in Cincy. I love going to visit her there! My sister goes to Shawnee State, which is more southestern Ohio.

Hey. I don't think PA is a hick state. I used to feel this way about where I grew up (Orange County, NY). But you know what, living in NYC has taught me that where I am from is just more laid back, not necessarily "hickish". Actually living in an urban environment has made me appreciate my roots even more. I feel blessed to have grown up in such a sheltered environment because I see the latter every day down here. I think there are "hicks" where ever you go, and they can be in an urban setting, too. I think also that a "hick" is more of an ignorant person, and the person who said that to you is definately a hick of sorts in my eyes.

I don't think of PA as a hick state.

But there are hick parts of every state I've been to, I mean I don't think of NY as a hick state at all, I was born there, spent summers there, but I've been to some really "hick" areas.
