Got my OES "A" certificate!

Those of you who are Masons and/or Order of the Eastern Star members will be glad to know that at the District School of Instruction today I earned my Texas "A" certificate of ritualistic proficiency. (Other OES grand jurisdictions may have different proficiency requirements.) Lot of hard work went into it memorizing the OES secret work and a whole boatload of answers to questions on the ritual, constitution and code of laws, but I'm glad that's done and over with! Now I can breathe a little easier... until it's time to be certified again next year.

That's awesome, congratulations.

Are you tested every year on the same material? (If you can't answer, I understand)

Congrats! i know it is hard. Job's Daughter prof exam is pretty simple but OES is hard. Plus i am not 15/ 16 yrs old anymore and memorizing work is harder now vs then.

Yep. For an OES "A" cert in Texas, it's a 100% score on the Secret Work (in which copies issued to chapters are very strictly controlled) and at least a 90% in questions on the published ritual, constitution and code of laws. A "B" cert is for scoring 100% in the secret work only. All questions are administered orally.

Masons in Texas and other jurisdictions have very similar proficiency requirements for certification in the ritual. I was once certified at a "C" level of proficiency in the Texas and Oklahoma work.

"C" - questions and answers in the categorical lectures, plus opening and closing a lodge
"B" - same requirements as a "C" but adds conferral of the three degrees
"A" - all requirements of "B" and "C" plus the long-form lectures.

Other than Kappa Sigma's ritual certification process (don't worry, all I know is what is open-source on the KS website), I don't know if other fraternities or sororities do the same; I know Alpha Sigma Phi does not.

Ahem... it's 'brother', last time I checked. (It's easy to get confused, since Alpha Sigma Alpha and Alpha Sigma Tau sororities also call themselves 'Alpha Sigs'.)

Forgive me, brother!

This is also what happens when I don't pay attention to the signatures.

Especially at 3 a.m. in the morning.

I am very proud of you! That is so awesome. My chapter is in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and I don't get a chance to visit them much.

Very interesting - that's awesome that you were able to accomplish that certification.

I also sent you a PM
