Arrow Ridiculous: DiCaprio Gets Lifetime Achievement Award

By MICHEL CIDONI, Associated Press Writer

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - On the heels of an Oscar nomination, "The Aviator" star Leonardo DiCaprio (news) wrapped a high-flying week by accepting the Platinum Award from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

The award, created to commemorate the festival's 20th anniversary, was given Sunday night in recognition of the actor's "exceptional career," festival director Roger Durling said.

DiCaprio's arrival elicited screams from hundreds of fans — a festival first, Durling said. Being greeted in such a way "is kind of like an out-of-body experience," DiCaprio, who plays Howard Hughes in the movie, told Associated Press Television News.

"It's a lifetime achievement award, which is completely and utterly surreal, given I'm only 30 years old," he continued, with a laugh. "But, you know, what has it been? Almost 17 years now. I've done quite a few films. But what's really exciting, for me, is that this is what I really love doing. It's what I want to do for the rest of my life."

And there it is in a nutshell. What this "award" was really about was publicity for a second (or third? fourth?) tier film festival.

That has to be it, because there's no other way he could get a lifetime achievment award.

I just don't get it. It's interesting that even HE sees the irony in the award.

Look at it this way. His "lifetime" hasn't been that long, so the committee had a lot less research to do.

That was some of his best work. Plus, you know, the whole mystery of would he survive the Titanic.

I'm all for him receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award - if he plans to pass away within the next year.

Come on, now! These should be saved for people who do Depends ads, not a 30-year old!!

Haha...well I'm not sure I would go that far. Steve Martin and Robin Williams both got similar awards this year, and deservedly so.

However, I agree he is way too early in his career to garner such an award, with a rather thin body of work.

I think that only people who accept Social Security retirement benefits or have a fatal illness should receive lifetime achievement awards.

I just hope that Martin Scorsese will finally receive the Oscar that he deserves.

I would have politely declined that award and hinted that . . a reworded award would be accepted graciously.

I can live with that.

I can also live with James' suggestion, a reworded award.

DiCaprio's own humor about this says more than the Santa Barbara International Film Festival's sense.
