Hey ladies,
I hope you can help a sister out. I've had trouble with my hair for years. I've worn a relaxer since junior high and #1 I've had the worst trouble with dandruff and #2 As soon as I leave the shop and I start keeping it up myself it is all down hill from there.
I got braids a couple of weeks ago and I loved them but I had to take them out because of the itching and dandruff.
Can any of you ladies recommend any products for dandruff for black people???

What type of braids do you have? Right know I have freestyle braids..what works for me is
Shea butter shampoos and conditioners

I had cornrows right on my scalp. Kind of like a long version of what the guys wear

Go to a dermatologist. Excessive dandruff isn't natural. We black folks tend to wash our hair less often than whites and this also doesn't help... but a dermatologist can rid you of your dandruff problems... I use a prescription shampoo called Capex... it's the "Cadillac of dandruff shampoos"... and it worked on me - with dandruff so severe that it was in my ears, on my forehead, and in my eyebrows.

t-gel is a pretty good product too (but it smells bad). also, nioxin is good for dandruff.

Medi-Dan is a really good over the counter shampoo that gets rid of dandruff, too.

At least it worked for me!

Also a good reason to see a dermatologist is that alot of times what we call dandruff is not. There are several skin conditions that cause flaking but for different reasons then dandruff. They are not responsive to normal dandruff shampoo that does not treat the right problem but a dermatologist can help them.

Nyzerol (I think that is how you spell it) is good too. My dermatologist recommended it to me. It is now over the counter but at first the only way you could get it was to have a prescription.

But make sure you see a dermatologist.

Have you thought to go to the dermotologist and get checked to see if you have psoriasis. It looks similar to dandruff, but unlike dandruff psoriasis will never go away. It can be controlled, but not cured. I have had it since I was 8 years old. You have your good days and your bad days. DO NOT USE TAR shampoos, it will take your relaxer out with a blink of an eye. I use regular shampoos, but at times I have to use a shampoo for psoriasis as well. Go to your local beauty shop and look in the shampoo section. Try shampoos for non-black hair, but like I said don't get a TAR shampoo, you will need a relaxer every 2 weeks, which is unhealthy.

Mija, my suggestion to you would be that you reduce the use of alcoholic products you put on your hair, it really dries it out. Oil your hair with olive oil daily before bed and wrap with a silk scarf. Wash your hair every 2-3 days and massage the scalp real good. You might want to use a grease with sulfer in it-girl suffer stinks but it will have your head medicated and less flaky. Use a strong dandruff shampoo try Sebastian, Sulfer, and Doo Gro has a shampoo out but I've never seen Doo Gro's results, but you might want to look into it. After about 4 times of doing this if you don't see results I would say
