Who doesnt know how to cook??

I'm 22 and I just cooked my 2nd meal EVER tonight and my Grandmother and mother think this is a travesty. My younger sister has been cooking full course meals since she was about 11, yet I dont think Id be capable of making an edible grilled cheese sandwich.

Is anyone else like me or conversely, is anyone a realllly good cook and when did you start cooking? Whats your specialty??

I've known how to cook for ages, but I've never really enjoyed doing it until this year.

I make really good Indian food (thanks to my mama), all kinds of different dishes. I make really yummy pad thai as well, but desserts of any kind are my specialty.

You know I think I'm a decent cook but Mr. valkyrie puts me to SHAME. He never uses a recipe and just comes up with the most amazing, random things.

The one thing I do that he doesn't is bake. Now that I've gotten the hang of high altitude baking, I make some killer cookies.

I've been cooking since I was a child - I made my first full dinner at seven. I cooked at least half of the time at home since I was 10. When I first took home-ec, the teacher asked who could make macaroni & cheese, and I was the only person who put up their hand. She asked how, and I said, "First you make a white sauce, then..." She stopped me and said, "You know how to make a white sauce?!" I was honestly confused, and said, "Who doesn't?" I think I got my A that day.

My mom started working afternoons when I was 15 so I learned to cook then. If I hadn't learned, my dad, brother and I wouldn't have been eating! My mom and I planned the menus together based on my school activities and when I would get home. She taught me how to do it all with very detailed directions. I had always enjoyed baking anyway though. I most like to bake and do Italian dishes.

There is a show I've found on the Food Network... "How to Boil Water". I won't get to see it when I'm at work but you might be able to watch/tape it.

Cool

Like to eat Hate to cook!

With long days at work is hard to really get into cooking.

But, get a Slow Cooker and cook book!

Use oven for backing, can do a lot of items.

There is a recipe thread on site somewhere.

Instant Gravey, Potato, stuffing, and other potato instant recipes and in box.

Learn to cook, starve, or eat out all of the time and go broke!

Trust me you will make mistakes.

My dinner used to be ready when the smoke alarm went off!

I can cook, I just don't do it often. It seems pointless because I live alone. I just don't see the point in cooking for just me, so I only do it if I have friends coming over to eat as well.

Prior to enlisting in the United States Air Force, I could barely fix a macaroni and cheese dinner, much less burn water. Eight weeks of technical training and the Air Force turned me into a halfway decent cook - ahem... aerospace food service technician (Death From Within!) - Once I got out and tried cooking for a living in civilian life I got tired of it mighty quick. You really have to love cooking to do it for hundreds of people, and be consistent the whole way through.

I'll cook only for myself, for family and close friends, and occasionally prepare a covered dish for dinner at my local Masonic lodge, but that's about it for me.

I CAN cook some, but it's more like I DON'T cook. I agree, it's not much fun to cook just for one person. My friends laugh at me for watching all the cooking shows.
