'Law & Order' Star Jerry Orbach Dies
'Law & Order' Star Jerry Orbach Dies
Top Stories - AP
NEW YORK - "Law & Order" star Jerry Orbach has died of prostate cancer at 69, a representative of the show said Wednesday.
Orbach died Tuesday night in Manhattan after several weeks of treatment, Audrey Davis of the public relations agency Lippin Group said.
When his illness was diagnosed, he had begun production on NBC's upcoming spinoff "Law & Order: Trial By Jury," after 12 seasons playing Detective Lennie Briscoe in the original series. His return to the new show had been expected early next year.
On Broadway, the Bronx-born Orbach starred in hit musicals including "Carnival," "Promises, Promises" (for which he won a Tony Award), "Chicago" and "42nd Street."
Among his film appearances were roles in "Dirty Dancing," "Prince of the City" and "Crimes and Misdemeanors."
How sad. I loved Jerry Orbach...

This is so incredibly sad. I watch L & O every single day of my life...I feel like I've lost a family member.
Jerry Orbach and Marlon Brando in one year is just not fair.

I just heard about Jerry Orbach's passing about a half an hour ago, and feel terrible. What a huge loss for the acting community!

I saw him in this show on Broadway in 1967. I believe he was also in the original off Broadway production of the Fantisticks.
This news is now listed here and also in Entertainment and Chit Chat.
ETA..Confirmed that he created the role of El Gallo in The Fantisticks.
Here's his NBC Bio...

I am so sad. He was one of my favorite detectives and I loved his sarcasm on the show.

Died of prostate cancer. He must have had it for a while before discovery and treatment.
I hate to hear this; I thought he was terrific.

Who's going to put Baby in a corner now?
Actually I just watched Dirty Dancing this weekend. Twice. I'm not a Law & Order fan but just about everyone else I know is.

so sad :(
I loved Jerry Orbach on Law and Order. I was so sad when he left- I can't get into Dennis Farina. I am totally one of those avid fans that watches the TNT reruns. I even liked him as Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast. It is just kind of surprising that this happened because the papers/entertainment magazines said he was getting better.
I wonder what's going to happen to Jerry Orbach's upcoming Law and Order spinoff- if its going to be canned completely or someone will replace him. In his spinoff?
So sad.

According to the producers, they will use the stuff they've already shot -- so he will appear in the early episodes.

Following tradition, the marquee lights on all Broadway theaters were darkened in memory of the late Jerry Orbach last night.
