Hi Lauren,

I'm assuming you mean not fraternities which will technically allow people in regardless of culture (but which perhaps have special emphasis on a particular culture/ethnic background. E.g. HBGLO's inc. non NPHC and NALFO orgs). But I took what you posted to mean that you were interested more in fraternities which had mulitculturalism as an overriding objective and which were not set up specifically to cater for any one "community" more than another.

Anyway, someone posted a question about multicultural orgs (if anyone knew any others) and I found it the other week (it was posted two months ago) and no-one had replied. :-( So, in doing a bit of quick research I found a bunch of regional/national multicultural orgs - more sororities than fraternities but a bunch of fraternities too. Here are the ones I found: decadence.

I believe she's referring to specifically multicultural orgs. I know of many Asian-interest and Latino-interest orgs in my area. But, there are fraternities that specifically state their existence as multicultural. My sorority is legally called Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. Not Theta Nu Xi Sorority.

I do have a VERY random question, and i'm not trying to be ignorant or funny.

If a group is Asian-interest or Latino-interest, how multicultural is that really? Shouldn't a multicultural group focus on ALL cultures?

in response to kddani:

Being a multicultural GLO can be about being multicultural (based on ALL cultures) or based on a minority group (Latino/a, or asian)

On another note being a multicultural GLO isn't about being physically multicultural it's about being multiculturally minded. If you look at Theta Nu Xi, we aren't all a part of minority group, but we're all bonded together as ONE in an effort to promote the awareness of diversity, and the importance of knowledge about diversity.

I hope this helps. =)

CGLOs???

Wouldn't Latino, Asian, etc. be considered Cultural Greek Letter Organizations (CGLOs)? Just wondering....

You see some specifically Multicultural Fraternities (and Sororities) on the National Multicultural Greek Council website www.nationalmgc.org ....

Honestly, I think it just gets grouped in there because more often than not, they are placed into multicultural Greek councils on campus.

OFF on a tangent...
I think, that in America we fail to realize all of the cultures WITHIN a cultural category. For example, Puertoricans and Mexicans honestly don't have much in common with each other. From the outside, one may meekly think 'Well..they both speak Spanish'. But the reality is that most dont look alike, talk alike, think very alike, eat alike or enjoy the same music.

Judging from what I know from my Asian friends, it's the same thing. For example, Filipinos and Chinese people...very very different.

So in a sense, an LGLO or an AGLO are kinda multicultural to those who join.

I've said this same thing, before on GC, about all GLOs. EVERYONE comes from a different place. "Multicultural" GLOs are those whose specific purpose is to specifically honor and encounter all cultures, not only to accept all cultures and be non-discriminatory. There's a difference.

Like Carol9a said, on many campuses they will just group all the AGLOs, LGLOs, etc. into one council called "Multicultural Greek Council" or "Ethnic Greek Council." But it doesn't mean that the individual organizations claim to be multicultural in purpose. My sorority is a Latina sorority, plain and simple. We do have sisters who are of backgrounds that are other than Latino (and we certainly do not discrimate on the basis of race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, disabilty, etc.), but the vast majority of our members (I would venture to say well over 95%) are of Latino origin. We were founded to meet the needs of Latina women in higher education, and to serve the Latina/o community, and I think even if our membership dynamic were to change someday, our mission would not.
