Here's a shock...Ohio University's new football coach...

"ATHENS, Ohio – The search for Ohio University’s 28th head football coach has culminated in the return of Frank Solich to his native state. The 60-year-old Cleveland native comes to Ohio with an impressive resume, including a .753 winning percentage during six seasons as head coach at Nebraska."

While a lot of "big name" coachs have gone from the MAC to bigger things, the reverse is not all that common...

good for him, he wasnt treated the best when they let him go, which sucks but the change will be for the best for both parties... callahan can bring the program back up and solich will have expectations set that he'll be able to meet

After Callahan's performance here in Oklahoma, I lost a lot of respect for Nebraska. He and Pederson need to go.

I predict another 5-6 season next year. Maybe we'll see some more streaks end before the powers at NU figure it out. At the rate players have been defecting lately, he's going to have a heck of a time fielding a team with anything besides Freshmen.

And congrats to Solich. A good man. Doesn't Ohio run an option offense?

what rate?? two players left. andy birkel who was a freshmen and ross pilkington who is staying at the school but doesnt want to play football. they left but they were in the coaches doghouse for most of the season.

next year nebraska will be competitive. now they get a full off season to develop the talent here and for everyone to learn they new systems. and it doesnt hurt that nebraska has the #1 recruiting class on rivals.com they have 3 pocket passers coming in and the competition for the job will be stiff. they will start placing people at better positions, such as david horne, a rb who played a lot of receiver against colorado, and did well. Matt Herian should be good as new as well, his injury really hurt the team. within 5 years, nebraska wins a national title, ya could say im jumping the gun, but i remember when oklahoma really sucked and when stoops came in he turned it around and look where they are now...

Yes. Brian Knor, the immediate previous coach was QB at Air Force, and the coach before that, who brough Knor in as an assistant (Can't remember his name right now -- brain f-rt) also ran an option offense.

As you can imagine, it's tough to recruit against Ohio State, Michigan, etc. (although that's not a good excuse because most of the MAC teams have to do it), so some of the skilled players tend to be smaller and it would appear that the option makes sense. Not under Knor, though, I guess.

I should add that Ohio has a new President, who is a former O.U. athlete himself (and an Omega Psi Phi) who seems intent on upgrading the athletic program. He wasted no time at all in making this change.

It would be fun to see Ohio really competitive like we where back in the sixties when I was an undergrad.

Callahan is no Stoops. Remember, Stoops came in, implemented a VERY different system, and went 7-5 his first season, and 13-0 his next.

At what rate? You've had 4 linemen leave (not counting Incognito who was rightfully kicked off the team): Chris Patrick (4-star transferred to Mich, MSU or Purdue), Danny Muy, Cory Timm, and another 4-star guy, Ryan Schuler. Nebraska also recently lost Ross Pilkington and Andy Birkel. None of these guys had anything nice to say about Callahan and company when they left.

As far as the recruiting class, they have 24 signees. The second place team has around 14. They are only #1 due to the number of committments. Here's a link to the rankings... 12 3 star players. There are a couple of good players, but it's a very bottom heavy class so far.

Again, I was VERY unimpressed with the behavior of your coaches when they visited Oklahoma. I've never seen anyone act in such a classless way, felony charges are still pending against one of your linemen who assaulted a spirit-club member off the field. I've always respected Nebraska, even when Osborne was running up the score on weak mid-90's OU teams -- I believe y'all even threw "fruit" onto the field back in those days.

You taught the class, you would know

. My broadcasting professors always held that we needed to spell the name completely out if there was any ambiguity as to what it was, and then we could abbreviate.

Of course, I only have about a year and a half experience writing and reading news copy for a college TV station. Hardly makes me an authority.

I only taught the live production part at Colorado, Larry Zimmer, former voice of C.U. and the Denver Broncos on KOA Radio taught (still teaches I think) the announcing/journalism part.

I just jumped on Hoosier for using the UNC initials with no attribution in another thread. Here in Colorado, those letters refer to a college in Greeley.

As I pointed out to my sister-in-law when she called one year to gloat over Michigan beating Ohio State...

"Hey, out here in the West, "M" stands for Missouri, "OSU" is Oklahoma State, "OU" is in Norman and the football season ends every year when Nebraska beats Colorado..."

My other example in another thread is that both my wife and I graduated from O.U. Our son is a junior at O.U. Our oldest daughter graduated from O.U. after transferring from UNC.

Translated, that means that Mrs. DA and I graduated from Ohio University. Our son goes to Oklahoma. Our daughter graduated from Ohio University after attending the University of Northern Colorado.

What those letters mean depends on where you live.

I read about him in last sunday's Plain Dealer newspaper. He's seems very intent to give the athletic program a complete overhaul.

Interesting guy. I had dinner with he and his wife and introduced him at an alumni dinner during Homecoming this year.

He ran track for Dayton Chamanade, was recruited by Ohio State, but didn't want to go a school that big, and the O.S.U. track coach suggested Ohio.

One of his fraternity brothers when he was an Ohio University undergraduate was Cleve Bryant, who was O.U. quarterback in the mid to late 60's. Bryant played a couple of non-eventful years in the NFL and then became an NFL coach. In 1967, under Bryant's leadership, Ohio was 10-0 and went to the Tangerine Bowl. (Lost to the University of Richmond)

In any event, he knows that O.U. was a competitor back then and hopefully can be again.
