What's flipcup?
I know it's some sort of game.
I'm guessing it isn't a game of 'catch' played with a paper cup.
What is it?

known in Kentucky as tippy cup..........it's a drinking game. We always play with plastic party cups. everyone drinks and has to try and flip the cup over, you compete with the people next to you. It goes in a circle. I cant really epxlain it sober, because I learned how to play it drunk, so I only remember how to play when I'm drunk :P

Oh Decadance, it's a glorious game. There are 2 teams, each lined up on opposite sides of a long table. Everyone puts a small amount of beer in their cup (usually up to that first little line on the plastic cups). At the same time, the first person on each team chugs their beer, then puts their cup back down on the table, with the bottom down and hanging a little bit off of the edge of the table. You use that little bit hanging off to try to flip the cup upside down. Once you've successfully put flipped your cup upside down, the person after you may begin chugging their beer and flipping their cup. It goes down the line, and the first team to make it all the way to the end of their line with everyone's cups flipped wins. I've also played where the last person in line is the "anchor" and has to drink 2 in a row and the play goes back up the line to the first person. It's a fun game.

Flipcup is great! It's a drinking game where you have 2 or more teams, in a line, in front of a table. Each person has a cup of beer. The first people of each of the teams have to drain their cups, put them on the table and try to flip them over so that they land upside down; the next person in line can't drink until the first person gets their cup to land right. It keeps going like that until one team finishes first, and they win.

This was called 'boat races' at my school and was the theme of many many many unofficial exchanges, and the sororities really got into it with making team t-shirts using ducktape, etc...

Is THIS why Rudey's old signature said "who wants to go another round of boat racing"? Is it a midwest thing?

Yes and no...boat racing is different because it can include other activities and doesn't end just there after you flip it over. I did this for the first time in Binaghamton in upstate NY so I doubt it's a midwest thing. There were lots of Canadian bros there too so that might have something to do with it.
Flippy cup: Divide a team into two equal numbers of people. Everyone is to have a cup with an equal amount of beer in it. Have the two people in the center drink their beer and then set in right side up on the edge of the table then flip it upside down. Then the next team member goes. The next team member may not go until the previous member has drank and flipped their cup upside down. The race continues until all of the members of one team are have flipped their empty cups upside down.
Flippy Cup (Central Michigan Style): Get a small group of people and divide them up into two even teams. Lets say we have 10 people so its 5 vs 5. One team gets on one side of the table and the other team lines up on the other side of the table so that everyone should have an oppenet straight across the table from them. Now everyone fills there cup up with beer and when everyone is full the games begin. You start from either end of the table. So lets say we start from the far left end. Once someone shouts go the person farthest to the left and his oppenet across the table from him will slam their beer and once there beer is gone they must move their cup to the edge of the table so half of the cup is hanging off the table then they must flip the cup using there fingers and have it land up side down on the table once this is accomplished the person next to you (your teammate) may begin drinking but they CAN NOT start until your beer is gone and you flipped your cup so its facing down on the table. Then you just keep moving down the line until the last person in your team has flipped there cup. First team to complete this wins. And the losers well the punishment is up to you for the losers.
Boat racing: In Boat Races there are 2 teams, each has its own side of the table. Each participant stands beside the table with a cup of beer in front of them. On the count of three, everyone cheers "GO, GO, GO, CHUG!" The first person in each team chugs their beer, then puts the cup on the edge of the table upside-down. They flip the cup until it is right side up by flicking it. When they have accomplished, the next person on the team goes, etc. After the last person in one of the teams has finished, that team has one.. and they will go on for the next game if there is another team waiting to play. Teams can consist of as many people as possible, depending on how long the table is.

Fun game!
Hey I love the flip cup game! Apart from the Beer Pong, the flip cup game is a game people love, especially in the midwest (?). At least I know our Indiana brothers play it too.

Didn't see many instances of Flip Cup played back in my undergrad days; it was Quarters (regular rules, Texas rules* and Suicide Quarters**), along with Thumper and Fuzzy Duck (popular with the ladies).
* Texas Rules: No pointing, no swearing, no sayin' 'drink, drank or drunk'.
** Suicide Quarters: Add a second cup behind the first one. Should the quarter bounce and land in the second cup, the shooter makes the hapless victim drink BOTH cups!

The thing about flip cup and boat racing is how the rules can be modified so well - like playing it strip. Also the level of taunting in this is better than most games like pong and quarters because so many people are involved.

good explanations - the only difference was for boat races we'd put the cup on top of our heads at the end (that way if you were cheating a bit you'd get beer all over you.)

I need to get out more. The only drinking games I've witnessed or participated in were Pong, Killer, and the Boot.
