What's your ideal tv show
I always try to vision a television show that I know I would sit down and watch religiously every week, something at the caliber of the original 90210 and Melrose Place shows, since I can't find anything that I like watching in this way nowadays. I actually would love for there to be a show with Black college students dipicting the life of educated black students and their experiences, actually like A Different World, but a more up to date one. I think As The Sands Burn should be brought to the screen. Seems to me, like many of you have already said, that the majority of Black tv shows today are like Minstrel shows and are only exploitative comedy shows that don't realy add or promote any positive cultural aspects of Black American life. I mean, yes we love our Martins and Steve Harveys cuz their humor is often catered to "us", but where are the Cosby Shows and Different Worlds that depict the middle class enjoyment of life that Blacks more often than not experience? We don't only need to be shown as crime victims/inflictors, welfare cases, drug addicts, gang members, poor folk that the ER's, Chicago Hope's, and Law & Order producers depict as "reality".
What are some of your ideal shows that, if you could, would design and produce?
I really didn't mean to get off into my thoughts so deeply as to invoke a huge societal debate or discussion, this is actually meant to circulate tv show ideas. lol..so, please just answer my initial question...

I think an up to date Different World would be a great series, however I think ATSB would NOT be a great choice. Talk about stereotypes!! Based on that series I think folks would get the impression that Black college students (especially greeks) are back stabbing, not to interested in school or helping other, and preoccupied with sex.

I think ER depiction of "us" is pretty good (for a mainstream show). There are thugs and crazy people of all races. I especially liked the show they did were the white and black teenages came in with either stab or gunshot wounds and one was a gangbanger and the other was a good student, nice kid, etc. They did not tell which was which, but let us (and the folks on the show) "assume" based on stereotypes. As it turned out the gangbanger was the white kid and the black kid was the "good boy". It was a great show. Of course, I was quite p.o. when Dr. Benton was the only one who got caught "out there" and had a baby out of wedlock with someone he was not really in a relationship with. I mean Doug was sexing every thing that moved and no one ever got preggers. Wait a minute, Carol did get pregnant, so I guess that doesn't count.

Wooops....I guess I did what you did. You know how we are! Can't follow directions for nothin'! LOL Anyway...I am enjoying Soul Food on Showtime, although I wish they would show Damon as more than just a piece of eye candy.
I would also love to see a love jones type of show on a weekly basis. 20 - 30 something professionals, trying to find love, them selves, establish careers, etc. I especially liked their group discussions on different issues. That part reminded me of my friends.
I would also like to see a "Now and Again" (I think that is the name of it) type show with black folks.
I would also like to see a drama with a single black father raising a child. Hey! Maybe they could spin off "Bruce Van Exel" from Judging Amy with that fine behind Richard T. Jones! Ummmmmmm
Matter of fact, any black drama would be welcomed!!

LOL okay, sis! Back up off my man!!
But I agree, Black dramas better than South Central would be really welcome right now. NOT ATSB, I think it's too stereotypical, even for a soap. I would KILL to see a Black "Now and Again" or "Judging Amy!" I love those shows. I might even give up grad school and go audition for the brainy yet quirky younger sister with man problems and a heart of gold!

Ok, ok, I think I agree with you all about ATSB being too stereotypical. But I would still like to see a show that depits the fun and excitement of Black college life.

1. LAW AND ORDER
2. POLICE VIDEOS(my husband and I die laughing at the people on this show)
3. ALL IN THE FAMILY (it's amazing how IGNORANT Archie Bunker is)
4. ANDY GRIFFITH (Yes, I love this. He's so cunning and smart and I like the way he solves problems).
5. LIFE IN THE ER (this stuff is the real deal and I learn a lot).
6. INVESTIGATIVE REPORTS
7. JUDGE MATHIS
8. JUDGE JUDY (she don't take no mess)
9. UNSOLVED MYSTERIES (I still enjoy this show).
10. SEX IN THE CITY (those are my girls, especially Kerry)
Now I know that many of these shows air re-runs, but they are great. As you can see I love shows that talk about how crimes were solved. I find them educational and good sources for conversation. What do yall think?

If I could create a show I would make a Black version of Friends and reproduce Different World. A modern version!

I was thinking the same thing the other night as I watched an episode of Friends. I'm late for work every morning because I must watch the hour of A Different World.
Do you all like Girlfriends? I thought the show was unrealistic in some ways, then I saw the credits and the producer, Kelsey Gramer, and understood why I had that opinion.
When does Steve Harvey come on?
