Sad, but Mandela definitly could have done a lot more the stem the spread of HIV/AIDS over there instead of ignorning it until it's out of control like it is now.

He was at least a step better than the next president who kept telling the people of South Africa that HIV does not cause AIDS.

For some reason I thought it was closer to 33% of the pop. and something like half of the Army over there had it.

Mandela has been the bigest supporter of HIV/AIDS. He has done more, beside Zackie Achmat, to try to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. The Mandela Foundation have raised tons of money for the cause. Although he has admitted that he hasn't done enough during his presidency, he became one of the biggest AIDS crusaders in the world.

I think in him acknowledging that his son has HIV/AIDS is a very nobel decision. It drive home the point that no matter who we are, we are all at risk and should be careful about it.
