Fun DG Facts!

Hey ladies! I recently purchased a 1945 copy of the Anchora, and recieved it yesterday! I thought I would share some fun facts from it with ya'll!!

*One single copy of the Anchora cost $0.50
*A one year subscription cost $1.50 (this must have been before a lifetime subscription fee was included in the new member fees)
*Per capita dues for alumnae were $1.50 a year
*To renew your Anchora subscription as an alumna cost $1.00 a year
*If you were initiated before 1922, a lifetime subscription cost $15.00
*A list of the NPC sororities and pictures of their badges are on one of the pages. In 1945, the NPC consisted of: AXO, ADPi, AGD, AOII, Alpha Phi, AZD, Beta Sigma Omicron, XO, Tri-Delta, DG, DZ, GPB, Theta, KD, Kappa, Phi Mu, Phi Omega Pi, Pi Phi, SK, Theta Upsilon and ZTA
*Because of World War 2, convention was not held in 1944. Since a copy of DG history was usually given out at convention, the issue I bought was a copy of the Anchora that was really a history of DG. It was done that way because paper was restricted during the war, and since paper had already be alloted for the Anchora, this copy of the history was published that way.

I'm so glad this Anchora found it's way into my hands! It's in good condition, and it will sit proudly next to my song book from 1942!

I have a ton of my mom's old ANCHORA's...I **LOVE** going through them! It's so neat to see how far our beloved Fraternity has come! Her's are from the late 60's and early 70's mostly.

There are some 1920's issues for sale from a rare book seller for $8 each. I am getting more details. I also asked for a digital photo of the cover. I already have a history of the Fraternity from the 70's and a 1940's song book. I'd like some old ANCHORAs and then I'd like a really, really old pin.

Eta at Akron has tons of old Anchoras in our basement. They're from the late 1800s when they first began and go up. Its amazing because you look at them now and they are just a little magazine when they used to be thick 500 page books!

I never got a chance to look through a lot of them, but I did browse a time or two and thats how I found out that our Alpha Chapter was only 40 minutes away from Eta Chapter (it was at Mount Union College). Interesting....

Hmm, one good basement flood will wipe out an awful lot of history. They should really put them some place safer (less moisture/mold/better circulation etc)

I would love to have an old badge! I always look at them on ebay, but the prices get too high!

At convention this past summer, we honored an alumna who had served as the secretary of the NPC many moons ago. She kept all the rules and minutes and such in a green notebook--and thus the name "greenbook" came to be.

boy do I feel old. White daisy, the late 60's and early 70's were my time and I laugh at the way the old Anchoras listed who made cheerleader, who was homecoming queen, who was on what fraternity sweetheart court, who won this and that beauty queen, and even who was a member of what fraternity's little sisters!!!
By the time I graduated, though, they were at least listing who made what honorary and who graduated Phi Beta Kappa!

I sincerely hope that Eta Chapter at Akron lets National know they have those magazines. They are a treasure. Heck, if you guys need money, you should sell them. Lots of loyal members would buy them and you guys could probably re-do the house with all of the money you'd make!

To be honest.....I'd be very unhappy with anyone who would sell them. They belong to the chapter. And please don't think that just because they are in our basement, they are just piled up in a bunch of boxes. They are actually very neatly displayed on a bookshelf in our scholarship room. I'm sure that if we ever had to give them up, EO would be the first to receive them.

The basement at the ETA house isn't like a musty old basement...they have meetings and stuff in their basement...and it's very "lived in" - not just down at the bottom of the house and forgotten about.

I got to hear her speak when the officers from my chapter had a retreat at Delta Lambda (Mississippi State). She was quite a speaker!

I'm sure all the chapter recognizes that! I was j/k. I would absolutely love to see them one of these days. It would be a good idea if the Anchora would do an article on them and maybe let some of us take a peek into our past!

I received the three ANCHORA I ordered (1923/24/25) and they are very interesting....

--there are photos of all the girls who were Phi Beta Kappa (no cheerleaders anywhere)

--photo of Eva Webb from the 1924 convention plus many letters she wrote to the ANCHORA throughout those years, including mention of how she had no idea the fratenrity was still going until she had been invited to the previous convention.

--there is the first mention that if only alumnae would send in $1 each they would relieve the burden of sponsoring convention from the hostess chapter

--a birthday fund (to celebrate the 50th birthday of the fraternity) raised over $57,000 (think about that from the perspective of how much that would be today: $601,000 to be exact!)

--the 1924 issue includes a 11 x 13 fold out photo of all the convention attendees

--cost of the 1926 convention for delegates: $5 per day, room and board included.

--chapter reports included those who were engaged, married or had children

--the covers of all three issues are military grey with black print, very industrial looking

--each issue is quite long--over 100 pages, with photos sprinkled throughout

--there is an interesting section on fundraising ideas for the times
