Question Career Help

Hey ladies,
I'm currently a sophomore studying psychology, but I have NO CLUE what I want to do with my life. They say do what you enjoy and I enjoy the entertainment industry. I want to sing or act, but of course my mother says that is unrealistic.
What do some of you ladies do for a living/major in, in college and why did you decide to do that?

Ladycat I think that it is extremely important that you follow your own heart and not limit your potential by doing something to please your mother. Ultimately, it is you who will have to live with the decisions you make.

Last year I was in the same predicament. As a freshman, my parents strongly encouraged that I pursue Speech Pathology. I absolutely hated it and had to eventually come to terms with what was more important-- graduating and eventually working in a field I detested just to please my parents, or having my parents be disappointed in me for a few months and creating my own future.

It was a long, hard, and silent summer (they gave me the silent treatment for 3 months!), but this past August I enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences at my school. Currently, I am majoring in History w/ a Pre-Law minor. My interests in History and Law go back as far as I can remember. When I was younger, my cousins and I used to dig up our grandparents backyard as we looked for dino bones and Native American arrow heads. My room would never stay clean because I was always trying to keep too much stuff-preserving artifacts was the term I used Also, when I learned how to write my name I remember having my mom right up contracts in reference to special incentives for doing certain chores.

It is very satisfying to know that I'm where I want to be right now in life. Ladycat my prayers are with you as you make your decision about your future. If you need any added support, I'm here

Well Ladycat, don't feel bad. I changed my major 3 times while in undergrad. At first I was a pre-med major. I didn't want to apply myself at the time so I changed my major (at the end of my junior year :eek to speech pathology and audiology. I wasn't satisfied with that so I changed it again to social work and this is what my undergrad degree is. Now after doing social work for over three years, I realized that I wanted to work with people on a more personal level-----plus the work was extremely stressful. The turnover rate for social workers is verrrrrry high . So, I decided to go back to school and get my master's in counseling. I felt that it was more indepth than social work plus I continue to work with the community. I am currently an intensive in-home counselor and I work with teens who are at-risk for being placed out of their homes. I ABSOLUTELY LOOOOOVE MY JOB. You see, you haveto have a love and certain amount of commitment for your career/occupation or else you won't won't be satisfied no matter what you do. Of course I think about where I would have been had I followed through with my orginial dream (to be an MD), but I can't turn back the clock. I believe with all my heart that counseling was my "calling" and that GOD intended for me to work with people in THIS particular capacity rather than what I wanted at first. So don't be discouraged if you are not sure about what you want to do. But remember, no matter what ANYONE else says, ask GOD to help you and do what YOU feel is going to make you happy. Be Blessed Sisterfriend!!!!
