SN-Furman penalized: no parties, no pledges

Fraternity penalized in drinking incident

GREENVILLE--A Furman University fraternity has been penalized after an underage student was found drunk on campus, school officials said.

The Sigma Nu fraternity was hosting an off-campus party Sept. 12 when the underage student obtained alcohol, said Carol Daniels, coordinator of student services.

No further details could be released because the student required medical assistance, Daniels and university Police Chief Robert Miller said.

Daniels said parties were banned at the fraternity until Sept. 1 of next year. The fraternity also won't be able to recruit a class of pledges this year.

Harsh but fair, gives the chapter a chance to save the charter if they want to.

That's too bad. They were/are a very good chapter. My younger brother's fiancée who is a Chi Omega had some great experiences with the gentlemen of that chapter and was very complimentary.

Hope they pull through and get their act together.

That article is probably from The Greenville News. As a Furman alumni (I just graduated in June), I can say that I was really upset when I went back to campus two weeks ago, saw this in the student paper, then talked to a couple SNs I know. They are a great group of guys and the sanctions for the incident while needed are going to hurt them and the rest of the campus. Besides not being able to recruit until next September, they also are able to play in intramurals but not for the championship cup, have their Annual Beach Weekend but only invite their dates, and at least their formal is still on. They aren't allowed to participate in Homecoming either. The loss of Beach Weekend is going to be a BIG blow because of LOT of people party with the Sigma Nu's during this weekend, and typically they have to reserve a whole hotel for the festivities down in Myrtle Beach. And as a person who went to SN's beach weekend 3 years straight - that STINKS.

It seems that the admin felt like they needed to put their foot down with the alcohol policy on campus and make sure that some of the things that have happened regarding alcohol related injuries and deaths on campus don't happen again. They were trying to send a clear message that as a college student you still have to make responsible choices about drinking. My heart goes out to the guys, but I know that they'll be back next year and parties at Belvue will once again be as live as they were in years past. Keep up the faith, guys!!

Thumbs up

Baby4538, thanks for the input of a closer kind.

It is a shame but that is happening all over Greekdom for what is happening to us.

Granted, We as Greeks are being singled out more and more as We are the High Profile of the Campi accross the Country.

Also intersesting, there is a Group of Non Greek Students at the U. Ks who petitioning and growing stronger to drop the Drinking age in Ks. to 18 again. If I knew where to sign up with them I would in a heartbeat!

Vote, Die, but dont drink!
