Moving to Providence, RI

Hey everyone! After alot of talking and pleeding with my parents, I will be moving to Providence, RI the first week of Septemeber. I will be going to Johnson and Whales University for 2 trimesters, which is though Feburary. So for 6 months. Then I coming back to MTSU and graduating in May. Then more than likely, Ill be back up there to get my Masters at JWU.

I am looking for a place to live or someone to share a 2 bedroom or bigger with! I don't want to live on campus, its way too expensive. If anyone lives in Providence or close to JWU and needs a roomate or is leaving and needs someone to take there place, PLEASE PLEASE PM me!!!

Thanks everyone!!

Edited to ask if there is any other sites such as craigslist.org?

I can't help you find a roommate, but I lived in RI for 24 years, so if you have any questions let me know. You'll probably love it, most people do who aren't from the area. Too bad you're coming in September though, you'll miss most of the beach weather.

If you would like to live HERE, you can move in on July 1st!

Edited to add: I am moving back to Texas by July 1st and my apartment is a two bedroom, one study with hardwoods and a spacious kitchen and living room, lots of windows, cable ready, all utilities paid except heat, second floor, pets allowed, really nice downstairs tenant, separate entrance, laundry in basement, on the East Side.

depending on your means of transportation, make sure to look outside of RI. there are many places in southern MA that have housing options. for instance, new bedford, MA is only about a 25 minute drive from providence. i have a few friends who make that commute as well and it's not too bad.
don't rely on RIPTA though. those buses are notorious for disregarding schedules completely.

Hey DZSaigirl....that apartment sounds pretty good--I kind of want to live there!

Some links:

www.projo.com

The Providence Journal—RI’s major newspaper. Look under Lifestyles and you should be able to look up rentals online.

www.providencephoenix.com

An alternative newspaper that has some rental listings (and some fairly scary adult listings).

http://providence.craigslist.org/

This board is sort of a clearinghouse for all sorts of classifieds, seperated by major city. This one actually has some good listings.

www.riliving.com

A real estate website—mostly homes for sale, but occasionally some rentals.

Remember that there are several other schools in the area…University of Rhode Island Providence campus, Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, Rhode Island College, Providence College, and Community College of Rhode Island. You might try looking on their websites or calling their graduate student association offices to see if they have listings for people seeking roommates.

Remember, Rhode Island is pretty small and it’s fairly easy to get around. You don’t have to live in Providence, so look around. Good luck!

A warning--the East Side of Providence, where Brown and RISD are, is pretty expensive. The Mr and I paid $800 for a one-bedroom there a year and a half ago--and it's probably gone up. The area around JW--Downcity--is a bit more affordable. They should have an off-campus housing registry for you, with lists of other students looking for a share. How far you can go depends on if you have a car--I pretty much walked everywhere, or relied on RIPTA. The grocers tend to deliver.

Providence does have a craigslist.

dzsaigirl--did your husband graduate?

Providence's craigslist is pretty small. You can try that, but I think projo or the Phoenix would be better. And I would try to stay in or near Providence. Someone mentioned New Bedford, but if you live there, you aren't really experiencing living in RI. RI has it's own culture, and it's pretty neat. There is also a lot more to do in Providence than New Bedford.

I really think it's funny that $800 is considered expensive for an apartment. That's what I paid to live in Warwick. I won't even mention how much I'm paying now for my one bedroom in Boston!

It's not expensive.

I live in Manhattan now, and I was paying more for 1 room in a 3-bedroom. It's a lot for a one-bedroom in an old-ass house on the East Side, however.

I graduated from good ol' Johnson and Wales...Haven't been back to any school events because they seriously need some balls in the alumni department. Some better events would help...ANYWHO!

I can recommend a few places. Lord, I'm blanking on the names of the areas.

PM me so I can have some time to do some research for you!
