Jobs where people...
... tell you their life story?
My dad owns a self storage facility and I swear I get some people that just sit here and tell me their life stories for like 20 minutes. Most of the time it's why they couldn't pay their rent on time and please oh please don't sell my stuff.
And we've had some domestic dispute problems too. Like this woman who just called me to warn that she called the police because her ex is in teh area and was gona try to get something out of her unit (his name used to be on it). So I'm thinking grrreat good thing I have my trusty lil police buzzer. And she's telling me about how she found pictures of all types of naked women and blah blah and I'm just like "hmm wow". What do you say to something like that? And then at the end she says, "well I just wanted to let you know. He's not gona have a gun or anything but he might try to start shit with you." Thanks. I feel safer now.

My parents used to own a self storage place too. What stunned me about those places was how many people stop paying their rent on them and then apparently disappeared off the face of the planet earth. You have to post a public notice before you dispose of their stuff and then you're supposed to auction it off. A lot of what people leave isn't worth anything though so my brother and I went through college with an endless supply of free drinking glasses and ugly coffee tables.

Guilty. I forgot to send my payment while I was traveling this summer, and when I came back told the lady at the storage unit about camp, forgetting the date, forgetting my payment, etc... She's really sweet though and she goes to my church, so not quite the same thing...

Yeah we're really understandable about stuff like that, too. My dad isn't in it all for the money, he likes helping people.
Which sucks because, mentioning of auctions, the shit that people leave are crap. And then when they do leave stuff like photo albums, my dad just calls them and tells them to pick them up. Don't worry bout paying, just come get it.

This reminds me, when I first started in my field, I worked for an agency where we payed for stuff for clients, like storage. Being young and new and wanting to do "good" for everyone, I requested my agency pay storage for a former client I had who was getting evicted from his apartment. The policy towards how long the agency could pay for this kind of stuff changed a few months later and the client was really pissed that we couldn't pay anymore. (I found out it was mostly junk anyways he had in there). Because his payments were late, I requested one final payment from the agency to prevent his stuff from getting auctioned or thrown out (and he would have to come up with the rest). I had to go down there personally to pay this. The storage facility was located in Brooklyn over near the water, where all those isolated warehouses are. I got chased by a bunch of dobermans and rotweiliers trying to get to the storage facility to pay the last payment. Never ever EVER again.

DGqueen17, which BoA do you work at? Our firm (architecture firm) has designed/opened 78 BoA branches so far, and I am wondering whether your branch is one of them

When I did box office this summer for a little extra cash during the drama, I heard plenty of life stories.
"Well, we're not sure if A is coming, because she's B's cousin, and B married C, and C is in jail and they're going to get a divorce..."
And more.

You should have heard some of the stories people told me when I worked in classified advertising for the paper.

I (hopefully not for too much longer) sell Italian charms. I hear people's life stories all the time. They show me their bracelet and explain every charm.. tell me all about their cute little children, how they met their husband, their love of crochet (soap operas, soccer, painting... whatever hobby) The worst though is when customers order custom photo charms with pictures they bring in.They'll tell you all about their grandma who passed away, or one time someone's daughter (early 20's) had passed away in an accident and the person was putting her photo on a charm and told me all about it, she started crying, I didn't know what to say/do. Another time it was a customer's deceased daughter in-law who passed away while she expecting her what was to be the customer's first grandaughter. I also hear heart wrenching tales about pets... just horrible, makes me sad for the rest of the day when I hear stories like that...
