Another Kerry whopper?
Recalls hearing of '68 Martin Luther King murder while in Vietnam

WASHINGTON – Speaking at a Martin Luther King Day celebration last year, presidential candidate John F. Kerry told a Virginia audience that he remembered hearing the tragic news of the assassination while serving in Vietnam – though he did not begin his four-month tour of duty for at least seven months after the shooting. I remember well April 1968, I was serving in Vietnam, a place of violence," Kerry told the assembled, according to a report by Fox News Channel's Brit Hume. "When the news reports brought home to me and my crewmates the violence back home and the tragic news that one of the bullets flying that terrible spring took the life of Dr. King."
The date of King's assassination was April 4, 1968. However, Kerry was not yet serving in Vietnam, but aboard the Navy frigate USS Gridley. According to Kerry's campaign website it was not until Nov. 17, 1968, that he reported for duty in Vietnam.

Those presidential candidates say some of the darndest things. Kind of makes you go back to the days of Gore and claims that he invented the internet, discovered the Love Canal, etc.

For whatever it's worth -- and this goes for both candidates -- I can really understand how the events of those years kind of blend together.
I can remember interviewing Peter, Paul and Mary at a concert the night after Dr. King's murder -- they had done a lot of concerts and appearances with him. I can remember where I was when I heard that Bobby Kennedy was killed. I have probably hundreds of memories of other happenings during those times. But a lot of the specifics have blended together.
So I'll give the guys my age (and they both are) a little break when it comes to precise timing, etc.
Also, I seem to remember (although I'm not sure) that Kerry served on a bigger ship in the Vietnam coastal waters as well as his experience on the Swift Boats. That was still considered In Theatre even if you never stepped foot on Vietnam soil. Perhaps that is what he was talking about?

BOTTOM LINE: Kerry was trying to appeal to black folks. PERIOD. Kerry will say whatever is necessary to please whoever is listening. When you're running for president, you can't afford to be this INconsistent soo often....

So, he didn't "lie" about MLK, Jr. He "lied" about where he was, a location... right?

After reading your sig (which is pretty good, btw), I don't know whether it was an error, a lie or a mistake.
There are differences.

Is Kerry going to try to be the second "African-American" president? Like how Clinton claimed to be the first?
I can't wait until he tries to pander to the Native American vote and talks about how he remembers hearing of the death of Sitting Bull or Crazy Horse.
(not trivializing the Civil Rights movement or the profound improvements that Dr. King made for America, merely commenting on Kerry's 'fuzziness' with dates, facts, etc)

Well that seems to be one of his goals..but he doesn't have the charisma that Slick Dick Billy Clinton had...

Well, he IS married to a self-described African-American...
Delt Alum, speak for yourself. I am of that generation and I remember the day Dr. King was murdered.
