Diet and Exercise
Hello to all. Does anyone have any dieting and exercise tips for someone wanting to loose about 30 pounds FAST!!! Also, has anyone tried "Metabolife", if so, how well does it work. I am attending my ex-boyfriends wedding and of course I have to be the bomb . So any advice would be appreciated.

What's up, girl? Looks like you have an interesting task before you. If you want more information about Metabolife try looking at the website at Metabolife.com. Metabolife works by speeding up your metabolism (the rate at which you burn the nutrients you take in for energy). As we all have found out the hard way, this usually slows down in our mid to late twenties. Remember when you could eat what you wated and would gain no weight (well we know what's going on now). Metabolife also decreases your appetite and helps the body expel waste products. Finally it gives you energy. The main ingredients are chromium (proven to help with weight loss). It also containds ephedrines (naturally occurring caffeine). This is what gives you the energy, decreses your appetite and acts as the diuretic. You get the same effect if you dringk coffee (your appetite is decreased, you will have to use the restroom and you'll have more energy). The thing is that ephedrines are like amphetamines. They speed up the heart rate and decrease blood pressure. If you were to take a drug test after taking ephedrines, you would test positive for speed. Headaches, jittery-ness and heart palpitations (scary) are the most comon side effects. It does work, though. Just consult a physician before taking it. I would opt for an intense exercise and diet plan. Most people who are trying to lose weight fast should, without a doubt, drink 64 ounces of water per day. If you exercise, drink at least a gallon. Your diet should consist a lot of protein (found in eggs, fish, poultry and meats, also soy). When I am trying to stay real trim, I limit my carbohydrate intake. Many warn against this but it works for me. There are two types of carb (simple and complex). Your body utilized carbs for energy. Evereything you eat has carbs. What I did was I only ate 100 carbs per day. Usually no later than 2:00 p.m. That way I would burn the carbs during the day doing normal activities like walking around my office. I cut down on breads (I only ate whole wheat breads), pasta (unless wheat), NO SUGAR, no white rice (only brown), NO POTATOES. You'll notice that people who want to "bulk up" for like muscle contests eat a bunch of carbs (it puts the weight on then they just sculpt it into muscle). If you eat more carbs make sure you burn it. Eat foods high in fiber as well. Take in less calories than you burn per day. The recommended number of calories is 2500 for men and 2000 for women (average). The average american takes in 3400 calories per day. What does that mean? For African Americans it may be more because the foods we eat tend to be higher in calories. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, 3 days per week. I would say to exercise more, though. Like an hour a day 4-5 times per week. It takes your body the first half hour to realize that it is going to burn fat. The other 30 minutes is where the burn happens. Get some weight training in, too. The more lean muscle mass your body has, the more calories you burn at rest. In other words, muscle burns more calories than fat.
I know you weren't expecting all of this but this is my life. I am a certified group fitness instructor and personal trainer as well as a health science and kinesiology masters student.
PS A sauna or steam room work great for stress, the skin and help eliminate toxins from your body. They also make you sweat (you'll burn fat this way, though not a whole lot).
I hope this helps. Good luck.
Oooooooo-oop to my Devastating Sorors!!!

DELTABRAT:
That was great advice. Have you ever thought of starting a fitness website especially for African-American women? I would also like to see a diet support group for SORORS! Anyone interested?

Greetings,
There is no FAST way to lose weight, you'll destroy your metabolism. It's not healthy mentally, physically, or emotionally to lose weight for an occassion. Lose weight for YOU.
Start working out. If you don't already work out, try something light like walking everyday. Maybe lifting some weights. Cut the sugar and fatty foods out of your diet (You know the stuff we all love). Don't eat after 8:00 p.m. Drink lots of water. You'll be in the bathroom all the time, but it's worth it. Don't starve yourself, continue to eat three meals each day. Just eat smaller portions. If your are hungry between meals, eat rabbit food (carrots, celery, fruit, etc.)
In the meantime, as long as you buy the right type of outfit, I'm sure you'll be the bomb. Pay close attention to color, design, and cut of the outfit. Buy an oufit that exudes confidence, not a woman who is trying to impress a man that you no longer have. If you are really content on looking different, try a different hairstyle or change the way you wear your make-up (if applicable).
You are already the bomb with or without the extra thirty pounds and don't forget it.
God made us into beautiful, voluptuous, black women, enjoy the GIFT. Concentrate on getting fit and being healthy.
God Bless
Hunydip

DeltaBrat,
I have a question for you. My mom wants to lose weight, but she is 56 yrs old and basically hips run in our family. She walks 2 miles or more everyday, but she skips breakfast sometimes and then has large portions of lunch or dinner. I told her breakfast is the most important meal of the day and she cut her portions down to 5 smaller meals instead of 2-3 large meals a day. Am I correct to tell her this? Is there a safe way for her to trim down or do the genes have the final word? You can reply here or e-mail me: DevaSTating22@collegeclub.com
Thanks!

Deltabrat,
That was some very interesting information! My roomates and I have started a workout program, but haven't noticed a major difference. I see now what we have been neglecting to do (eat right) in addition to our work out. Thanks again!

Deltabrat,
I appreciate all that you said in your response to this topic! Now, my problem is that I LOVE BREAD! I honestly don't think I can live without it! I can do without chocolate and kool-aid and sodas and candy and and all types of meat, as long as I have bread in my life! I've been known to kill an entire loaf in one sitting-- just plain ol' bread with nothing on it or with it! Crackers are the only suitable substitute I'll accept in the absence of some soft bread!
Knowing that carbs and starches can act as catalysts for fat, what dieting advice can you give me that doesn't involve giving up bread completely?

the411,
I am in the same boat as you are. I LOVE bread!!! On top of that, I also LOVE potatoes. I don't think I can give those two up. I'm always wondering how I've managed to keep my weight down. I'm sure it'll catch up with me one day.

Hey Sorors!!!
I love you all so much. I can't believe the responses. I love the fact that we have health conscious sistahs within our sorority. Okay, where do I begin.
Red Velvet:
Yes, I have thought about starting a health and fitness newsletter for African AMerican women. I guess I'm still in the 80's/90's because a website would actually be more convenient and useful to reach African AMerican women on a larger scale. I would love to also have a column in a magazine/newspaper (you know like, Q&A). If Sorors are interested in a diet support group, LET'S DO IT!!! This is so positive. I am so down.
the 411 and kissy324:
BREAD, BREAD, BREAD. I know the pain. Carbohydrates are like drugs. They are very addictive for people. I've heard people refer to themselves as carb addicts. If you must eat bread, that's okay. Try to eat whole wheat breads and pastas. The white, fluffy stuff has very little nutritional value. That's the key. You will find that the carbohydrate content is similar in wheat and white. It's the other stuff, the protein, fiber, calories that are the difference. The white, fluffy stuff is very over-processed. Additionally, try not to eat the stuff late at night. Nothing past 7:00 p.m.
Don't forget, carbs are not unhealthy. Our body synthesizes carbs to make glucose which is what our brains run on all day. We need the stuff. Just NOT the over-processed type. Try wheat. Try crackers.
Good luck.

I love to see that my Sorors are so well versed in all aspects of living, but do you really expect less from a DELTA Woman? Anyhow, Deltabrat, that was some fabulous advice. I began a training regimen about two months ago. I am a relatively small person, but the weight that I do have settles in my breast and stomach. The breast part I don't mind so much , but the stomach can be a pain. Members of my Chapter, (The brainchild of my Sands, Delta4Life) have started a Delta Stepaerobics Program. When we say step aerobics we mean STEP aerobics! We take some of the basic moves from greek steps and incorporate them into a routine. You undergrads know that practicing for a stepshow is some of the best exercise around! Older Sorors, give it a try and in no time at all not only will you be in shape, you may be able to give some of the younger Sorors a run for their money in the local step competitions!

While I am late on this subject and had to dig it out...this is very intimate with me and very, what can I say, well I can't think of the right word now but it is an issue that I've always had to deal with and that I'm dealing with now. Some things that I am about to share are personal but I love you all like Sisters
I'm 20 years old now and I have been dealing with weight and eating disorders since I was 16, the summer before my junior year . I've done everything from diet pills to exercise...if you can think of it, I've probably been there and tried that. High school was just overwhelming for me emotionally and physically. I've always been an avid swimmer however I stopped my sophomore year in high school to pursue other things.
To make a long story short...during my senior and junior years in high school my weight was 115-120 (always hip heavy) but I was wearing a size 5/6 no more than a 8. I'm now entering my junior year in college and I weigh 145 .
My best friend weighs like 100 or so more than I do and she constantly asks me why I'm so worried about my weight and why I often complain and I can understand her reasons for asking but this has been an issue since before I met her.
Well I've been rambling long enough however I just wanted to say that my most recent "diet plan" is taking Metabolife while trying to maintain a calorie intake 1000-1200.
If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to email me at fcjnb8@hotmail.com

Carebear, how tall are you? You need to take a lot of things into consideration before you start a weight loss program. Are you exercising? If not, you run the risk of losing muscle mass in addition to any fat that you may lose. Also, how much metabolife are you taking? The combination of too much metabolife and too little food (along with NO exercise) will not produce lasting results, but may very well produce lasting side effects. Be careful, and if you haven't before, please let your physician in on your 'diet plan'. Take care.

Thatgirl...
I'm 5'1"...I'm eating alright (just trying to remain w/in the 1000-1200 calories...). As far as exercise is concerned I havent done so much this summer; however I went to workout once. Once I return to Richmond (8/13/2000) I'll be working much more.
