State of Greek Step Shows

Sorors, I received a forwarded email from one of our sorors in Washington regarding the state of our Greek step shows and it really upset me. The writer was expressing his concerns about the vulgarity and simulation of sexual acts that have invaded our step show routines. The part that really upset me was when the writer expressed how one of the 4 Pan Hel sororities got down on their knees while their male counterparts stood in front of them with their backs facing the audience and simulated oral sex on the middle of the stage!! (This step show the writer is referring to was held in March at one of the North Carolina Universities). It just angered me to no end just at the thought of this sorority being any of our sorors of DST!!! No matter what sorority it was, what happened to respect and sorority life representing finer womanhood??? I believe no matter what sorority we belong to, our founders would roll over repeatedly in the grave if they saw what was acceptable now in sorority life. Sorors of DST, we must realize that becoming a member of DST is a priviledge, not a right!! We need to hold dear the values of DST and remember why DST is such a legacy. DST should be used in no shape, form, or fashion for anything explicit!!!! We are women devoted to finer sisterhood, scholarship, and service. NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS!!!!!!!

Hey Sorors:

dstdiva49, I will e-mail you so you can send me what you have. Not to take away from your message but it may be the same message that was posted earlier yesterday in the AKA forum. It is titles "Stepshow Behavior" and was posted by AKAtude (for anyone who is interested). If it the same message by someone in administration at a college, it is very sad.

There was oncea day when stepshows were family events...not now, though.

In reading his message, I pray that none of the women who were simulaying these acts were our Sorors, but it being a Black woman in ANY sorority is a shame.

There are people who want to join DST for social purposes ONLY. These people will most likely, not see a problem with perpetuating such behavior. In deciding who is worthy of our esteemed Sisterhood, that should be taken into consideration. That sounds obvious, however, not one of us can account for what happens at every college campus across the nation.

I have been to shows where certain acts were simulated and when sorority names were called out, people held up the sign and gave up the calls as if proud.

We, as women, have to evaluate where we stand on issues of what it means to be a positive BLACK woman and role model for our children and community.

I can't wait to hear my Sorors and sisterfriend's and other's comments.

What's up Devastating DIVAs of DST...my Grandmother was a Hampton DELTA (God Bless Her Soul).!

In any case, I would like to say that I agree that some routines have gotten out of hand...
I had recently been thinking about taking my sister to a stepshow...but thought it might be too much for her little eyes...I didn't want her to see people raising their signs when folks were simulating oral sex on stage (for my explanation...see my post on Greek Life: Auxiliary Orgs.)

While we don't dis' each other as much in our routines, we sure do make use of our bodies in such a way that makes me think I'm at a Luke concert!

I'm telling everybody I know that points should be taken away (and the act should be stopped if things get out of hand like that)!

I'm tired of this perverted stuff being put on stage and perpetrated as a dignified example of how XYZ org enhances life...In stead of Girating and humping the ground, or so much rumpshakin'.....try just STEPPING...WE are too creative to rely on sex to pull us to the top of the comp...

A little nasty is ok...but there is a line!!!
