Spanking and Discipline: You believe in it?

No, never. There are better ways to discipline a child. Violence is unneccessary.

HOWEVER - while I disagree with the technique, I do not think it is child abuse when done properly.

Children need discipline. Sometimes it's enough to ground the child or confiscate his/her favorite toy; sometimes the kid needs a slap. You have to be careful where to draw the line, though - not enough discipline and your kids run wild, get addicted to drugs, etc.; too much and your children resent you and you border on child abuse. (This comes with the disclaimer that I am not a mother.)

Between consenting adults: That's another matter. It must be between consenting adults, though; spousal abuse is unacceptable.

Honestly, when I was little, the thing that pissed me off the most was THE CORNER. God forbid I had to sit in the corner for even 5 minutes.

I don't know if I'll spank my kids, but obviously I don't think you should hit your kid hard or with anything other than your hand. And NEVER across the face. Hit their butt or their hand only.

I agree with it completely. I may change my mind when I have kids, but I received plenty of corporal punishment and turned out okay.

I think there's a HUGE difference between spanking a toddler on the rear designed for spanking, and whooping on a nine year old. You should be able to reason with the nine year old, but that just doesn't work with the toddlers!

As for consenting adults, to each his/her own. I do agree that it should NEVER involve spousal abuse of any form, however!

I was spanked a grand total of twice. I was threatened w/ a spanking more times than I can remember, but I knew that the possibility of it was real. My parents did a good job of making good on their threats/promises, so that I just didn't blow them off.
If I have children, I would do all I could to discipline them without physical means. The corner, revoking priveleges, etc will be more my speed.

I was spanked by my parents I even had a wooden spoon used on me and I came out wonderful. I have fairly decent manners, I say yes/no m'am/sir. I have no qualms about spanking my kids if they need it, I'm not talking about daily, but when the situation warrants. I think I deserved it when I was younger b/c I'm very hard headed so the corner, sending me to my room, etc did not work on me. My dad other things he did such as poking my chest, pinching my neck etc which worked well when a spanking could not be performed.

My opinion is that the lack of/improper use spankings are the cause of these kids I see out being complete jack*sses to parents& other adults.

I was spanked as a child and I am an extremely good kid Anyways, I think when I have kids I am just going to try and be consistent with whatever punishment I choose. As long as my child knows that certain actions will bring certain responses then I think I will be ok.

I wouldn't spank a child. There is at least one other thread about this topic. There were some interesting answers posted in that thread.

If and when I have kids, I will only spank as a last resort. I will scream, yell, take away privileges (temporarily or permanently) and most definitely talk with them rationally.
