GC in the Trident

Everyone get their summer edition of the magazine? I was flipping through and noticed a little plug for GreekChat on page 24.

Haven't read anything yet, but it also looks like an editorial on Pledged. I hope Sarah Lindsay ripped Ms Robbins a new hole... in the nicest, lady-like Delta Delta Delta way, of course.

Maybe we'll get more Tri Delts on GC!!

I loved the new copy of the Trident!

I think that the recruitment article was a good way for a lot of us going into fall recruitment to re-evaluate how we approach the concept. For me personally, I want to go in and try to find out about the girls, deeper down stuff than what they want to major in and where they're from. (though that can be fun to talk about as well, so long as it's not all you have to talk about) I also would like to find out about campuses that do spring recruitment to see if it offers a more laid-back approach. (Although my own chapter has stepped away from skits for the overwhelming part.) This year we only have three days of class and then recruitment hits, and I remember how nerveracking that was for me last year. Any girls who've done spring recruitment willing to comment on how that was good and/or bad for you personally?

I really hope the plug for GreekChat leads more sisters to these boards...that would be amazing.

And after reading the editorial about pledged, I ordered myself a copy and plan to let any of my sisters who choose to read it (after I finish it, of course). After all, the best way to fight stereotypes is first to know what those stereotypes are, in my opinion.

i hate HATE HATE Spring Recruitment!!!!

By the time spring rolls around, the PNM know (or at least think they know) what sorority is the "best" or "coolest" or "sluts" or "picks everyone" etc etc etc.

I was on Panhel and I collected $$ for formal in the spring, and I heard girls actually talking to their friends about what sorority they would accept and which ones they wouldn't. I also think that a spring recruitment leads to a higher rate of suiciding (or what is it now? Intentional Single Preference?). Girls even say things like "I heard GHF hazes, but I want to be hazed." or "ASF is the group with all the fat girls." Its rediculous how much sterotypes girls can pick up in one semester. I know of one girl who went through formal with an open mind...and that was because she transfered second semester.

I tried really had to get my school to change to fall semster, but I don't think that is ever going to happen.

spring recruitment (AKA "COB" at my school) is a nice way to add girls to the chapter's total before fall rush.

i personally am glad that i went through the formal recruitment because i got to see all the chapters. on the other hand, one does learn a lot about a chapter from hearsay and reputation through the year leading up to COB. that said, most often spring recruitment is a good way for sisters' friends (that may already hang out with a majority of the chapter) to join, as well as for girls that know exactly who they want.

additionally, on the sorority side of things, it's much nicer than formal recruitment because while you still have MS and all that, the actual "parties" are generally very lax and everyone feels comfortable.

my only real beef with COB'ing in the spring is that the pledge classes are often VERY small. our most recent had 1 girl (as opposed to 23 in the fall) and last year's had 5 girls. that means that everyone has to work extra hard to integrate the new girls - not a problem if you're friendly and open, but still the new members don't have as many with whom to ally.
