Lightbulb The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Remakes

Hello
Yesterday, I read in the Pick Your Favorite about the Kelly Price remake of Shirley Murdock's "As We Lay". I like both the original and the remake. . . . however there are some remakes that have made me sick to my stomach.

Here are my Top Four Ugly's
1. Gladys Knight and Friends remake of Karyn White's "Superwoman" (UGH)

2. Gladys Knight's remake of Boyz II Men's "End of the Road" (YUCK)

3. Some new group who remade "Sweet November" by The Deele. I believe Troop remade it but correct me if I am wrong.

4. Luther's CD of Remakes (WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS HE THINKING??)

So I want to know what you hated to see remade and who should never remake songs. You will notice that I left Mary J. BLige out of this.

Hey Soror CrimsonTide4!

I just had to put my $19.13 into this topic.

It's actually quit funny because before I saw Mary J Blige's name, she AUTOMATICALLY came to mind. I think she should have been arrested and given jail time for destroying the beauty of many great classics. Unfortunately I can't think of any others off hand. And its probably better that I don't!!!

In so far as what you have listed, I agree 1913%

Much DeltaLuv!

Who should NEVER be allowed to do remakes:

Mary J. Blige
Lionel Richie
Diana Ross
LaToya Jackson
Gladys Knight
Brittany Spears
Dionne Warwick
Spice Girls

Instead of naming an individual I'll just name a genre of people who should NEVER do remakes and those are RAPPERS!!!

I had forgot all about rappers and their sampling. That was a good one.

I remember on Comicview when a comedian said that singers must go through an application process to do remakes. He set it up where Mary and KEith Sweat called in and Keith Sweat wanted to remake, "Let's Get It On."

What are songs that you never want to have remade?

Does anyone remember how maybe 2 years ago, Blackstreet remade a GUY slow song. That just seemed @$$ backwards to me but anywho. . .

His name is Teddy Riley. He seems to be in a new group every two or three years....

LOL! Sterling- first it was wrecks-n-effect (i still love rumpshaker), then blackstreet, what next?

On the remake issue. I was watching the old school videos and I'm sorry, I love Tina Turner, but to me no one can sing "Let's Stay Together" like Al Green.
Also, I've noticed that a lot of songs are remade into country songs very quickly (i.e. Brandy's "almost doesn't count" or is it vice versa?

Talking

First: NO ONE should be legally allowed to TOUCH Prince's songs, be it Tevin (waaack), Sinead (wiggety wack), or TLC (w- well you know)!!

Second: PUFFY, shut UP!! Stop Stealing! And he steals such baad 80's songs, too.

Third: Michael Bolton needs to PRAY that Heaven is segregated, because if it's integrated, many African-American stars and lyricists will be waiting...

ROFL

Finally, Teddy is back with Guy, so he has come full circle.

Now you know my music loving behind could not sit back and be quiet on this one!!! Okay, I feel Mary J., but I was mad when she sampled "Speak to my Heart" on her second cd. I'm talking about her song "Don't Go"(?). First of all, the background music is to the tune of "Goodbye Love" by Guy, but at the end she takes one of my favorite gospel sings and flips the script!!! I was hurt But the worst remake I have ever heard was the reggae version of "Sexual Healing". I'm cringing just thinking about it...

Or how about when they speed the song up from a slow ballad to a fast song. For example, if they speed up one more Lauryn Hill or Whitney Houston song I'm gonna scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am soooooo sick of Deborah Cox's slow songs becoming a "dance mix" as well as Whitney Houston and I think they did for Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton.

What did you all think of the song by Silk last summer and their slow song, "If You"?? It kind of had the Prince flavor to it.

^55 Sterling!

The only "techno" remake of a slow jam I ever liked was Brian McKnight's own remake of "anytime."
