Subject: Hazing at NIU
8-16-04
TO: John G. Peters, President, Northern Illinois Univ.
In today's Journal Standard, freshman football player Adam Schlamp says "the freshmen have already had some rough dealings with the upperclassmen", and I'm sure he wasn't referring to singing "I'm a Little Teapot" and the "Barney" theme.
"Schlamp said he expects the hazing to pick up as practice continues," according to the article by Graham couch.
Last year, the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at NIU was expelled from campus for hazing, and some individual members - the most active hazers - were expelled too.
I am interested in knowing if you are going to stop the hazing of freshmen football players, as you acted to stop hazing at the fraternity.
Please let me know.

Dear Dale,
I read this same article but did not arrive at the conclusion thar
"hazing" was indeed taking place. I will be speaking with the student
that you are referring to along with the coach and the associate
athletic director this morning as a part of my investigation into your
concern.

Part of the original article:
"I'm on the scout kickoff team tonight," Schlamp said. "A lot of freshmen line up against the No. 1 offense. You get a couple of reps a night at your position. You have to keep your mind right because you don't get many reps in practice."
Said Mosely: "It's all part of learning1; it's all part of being a freshman; it's all part of being a walk-on."
As for his first run-in with a 250-pound Division I linebacker, Schlamp just wanted to hurry it up.
"It's expected," Schlamp said. "It's going to happen, so I might as well not worry about it. It's a matter of having pride in yourself and getting up and going back at it."
Schlamp and the rest of the freshmen already had some rough dealings with the upperclassmen, even if it didn't involve a shoulder pad to the chin. The freshmen had to sing, "I'm a Little Teapot," on Thursday morning, followed by a rendition of the "Barney" theme song while holding hands.
Schlamp said he expects the hazing to pick up as practice continues but said it will be worthwhile when he runs onto the field Sept. 11 against Southern Illinois.
