Arroyo Tells Filipino Men Not to Kiss Her

MANILA, Philippines - Annoyed by a stream of unwanted kisses, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (news - web sites) warned overzealous male fans and supporters Wednesday that to avoid embarrassment they should not pucker up in her direction.

"First, show some respect. Secondly, I am conservative. I do not want to be kissed by any man but my husband," she told a town hall meeting in Laguna province, south of Manila.

Arroyo often receives kisses on both cheeks by unknown admirers in a practice known locally as "beso-beso" ("kiss-kiss").

Citing her conservative nature, Arroyo said she would only accept kisses from her husband, lawyer Jose "Mike" Miguel.

"Please, all the men in the country, so that I won't be rude to you, do not attempt to kiss me," she said.

The 57-year-old president was responding to an emcee at the meeting who joked that a man in the crowd wanted to kiss her but that he hesitated because he hadn't brushed his teeth.

Her statement was carried live on the nationwide ABS-CBN cable television.

During a visit to meet Filipino workers in Kuwait last year, one of Arroyo's female bodyguards shoved away a man who approached the president with his lips puckered and ready to plant a kiss on her cheek.

A picture of the man's foiled advance was published by many local newspapers.

The presidential palace then announced that no one should ever try to claim a smacker from Arroyo, who is always protected by her troop of bodyguards.

Yahoo news is weird sometimes. I saw this on the frontpage and then an hour later it dissappeared and I had a hard time finding it...

As beautiful as she is, I dont think we'd have the problem of many assholes trying to kiss Elizabeth Dole if she became president (I'd vote for her- she rocks)

Personally I see no problem with a female head of state (and technically I have one )... if looking for an example: the UK with Margret Thatcher (and the Queen too).

As president she should have the option of saying no to kissing strange men. It may have been the custom but something tells me that's about to change.

i think it might cause some issues negotiating with Islaamic governments.

while stigmas attached with being a female in office would lessen with increased frequency here, it might not elsewhere. it'll funny for about .5 seconds hearing late-night talk show hosts and stooopider people blame all her mistakes on PMS or menapause or general stereotypical female behavior. but eventually, we'll think about it less, and less, and we won't have to think about it being the first woman, or african-american, or whatever in office. we'll grow accustomed to having a "first husband." but countries that declare jihaad every other day, and have religiously practiced sexual oppression for thousands of years will take it as just one more reason to hate us.
