It started raining about 20 minutes before hand so the Christian group that had all the band stuff out on central campus scattered to the wind.
Those of us in the Sloss House for the LGBTAA Ice Cream Social had to move to a computer lab in the basement of the business college when the sirens went off.

Yay! Internet access while destruction goes on.

Here in Oklahoma, we have very elaborate emergency warning systems. I guess y'all need that stuff up in IA as well. From what I understand, my hometown is setting up a system that will also give every resident a phone call when emergencies occur.

You're probably talking about "Reverse 911," which is a really great idea if the town/city is small enough. It has been used in some of the Denver suburbs and smaller towns in Colorado with some success.

That's it. It's a town of about 70K -- Edmond, OK which is about 45 minutes from where your son goes to school.

You definietely are preaching to the choir on that one...

OKC a few yrs ago + midwest city destruction + my house 15 minutes from the path = me back home among my earthqaukes in sunny so calif!

Reverse 911 is used in soem areas of San Antonio and throughout New Braunfels (city of about 65,000 between here and Austin). They have had two 500-year-floods in the span of 3 years. People who lived along the river had spent the last two years rebuilding and then got hit again. There was minimal loss of life the second time, due in part to the reverse 9-1-1. After the second flood, people quit building along the riverbank and the city bought the land and is turning it all into parkland.
