What happens if you have class during recruitment?

I'm looking at the recruitment schedule and I have a class one of the days...

You need to call the office of student and greek life at your school and explain the situation so you can be excused from the recruitment activities. Make sure you absolutely get that cleared.

Normally I would be ok with missing one class, except this one is a 3 hour/1 day a week class so if you miss on day you're behind a whole week.

Um. I'm not sure we really want to promote skipping class for sorority activities.......

She's in school *to go to school,* and ALL sororities require a good GPA!

I'd say talk to your greek life office and figure out what to do. I can see where it'd be tempting to skip the class if you find out it's a 3 hr movie the prof is willing to let you watch the day before... but I imagine it's not.

For what it's worth, I missed a day of rush and ended up w/ my first choice.

If the sisters know why you're not there, they'll take that into account. I promise.

I had to miss one whole night of open events due to an audition to get into a musical group. We just had to let our Rho Chi know ahead of time and there was an interest room set up for all the girls who could not make it to one of the open nights. Basically it was a room with tables set up and you went and talked to a few members of each group whose party you were missing. I think we spent like 15min at each table or something like that. This was a while ago but I believe I was invited back to every group except one from that night.

So long story short..talk to your greek life office..I am sure they have an option that you can do so you don't have to skip class and miss meeting the women at that house. I bet its safe to say that you aren't the only one in this situation.

Some schools, such as mine, will do what's called "split parties" for girls who cant go to all of the parties for whatever reason.

Sororities like a variety of girls in their groups, so office of greek life tries to accomodate everyone. I know at UK they had special meetings for girls interested in recruitment but had band activities during the same week as well as for those with physical disabilities.

But like others have said and speaking as a scholarship advisor.......DONT SKIP CLASS for recruitment. We do like to recruit girls with good grades and keep girls with good grades (because some of our groups, my chapter in particular will terminate members for not keeping up grades), so grades are very important. Members will even tell you that school always comes first before sorority activities as well because it's that important.

Also like others have said contact the Greek Life office immediately and let them know your situation. Also remind your Rho Chi again when you get into your recruitment groups as well.

The split parties work extremely well in my opinion. You just spend less time @ each house but you still get to go to all of them & you won't miss anything!

Don't skip class for recruitment!

Talk to your rho chi or the greek life office, and make the situation clear, so that it doesn't look like you dropped out because you didn't turn up one afternoon.

I'm not sure of the specifics of FAU's recruitment, but if you can arrange split parties, that might be a good option. Or if it's a later round of rush and you get only a few invites, maybe you can get your "breaks" scheduled during the time you have to be in class.

You can also talk to your professor or someone else in the department to find out if there's another section of that class that doesn't conflict with rush and that you can attend that week.

Good luck!

Ole Miss Potential New Members can no longer do that at Ole Miss. If they miss class they are cut completely out of recruitment...

From Ole Miss Greek Website:

Potential New Members should attend all academic classes, lab, and study groups. A POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER MAY NOT MISS AN ACADEMIC CLASS OR LAB FOR THE PURPOSE OF ATTENDING A RECRUITMENT-RELATED FUNCTION. IF SHE DOES, SHE WILL BE RELEASED FROM FORMAL RECRUITMENT AND BE INELIGABLE TO SIGN A BID CARD UNTIL THE FOLLOWING SEMESETER. If there is a conflict between Recruitment activities and academic requirements, the Potential New Member should contact the Panhellenic Council so that an excuse may be sent to the sororities.
