Roger Clemens setting great example of parents of youth athletes

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...ens_youth_game

I mean, I've heard of parents getting to into the games because they want to relive their youth through their children, but this is ridiculous....

This may have been blown out of proportion, but as a youth official, I can't stand it when dumbass parents tell me how to do my job (Not to call Roger a dumbass).

Ok, he didn't get out of control. He didn't like a call, spit some sunflower seeds at the ump, got asked to leave and did so. I used to umpire the 13yr old league in my home town and that's NOTHING compared to some of the shit I went through that summer. I would have just asked him to calm down and enjoy the rest of the game or he'd be asked to leave.

Now when I umpired the 13yr old leauge I was 15 (almost 16). #1 - dad's don't like female umpires that know more about the game than they do.
#2 - dad's don't like when (female) umpires make fair calls all day long and then their team loses.
#3 - dad's don't like it when the female ump calls the cops to have them removed from the property!

I would warn parents once and if they got too roudy I would tell them they had to leave and when they refused to leave I gave them one more chance with a warnign that I would call the police. Well, one dad didn't think I was serious and didn't realize that I lived next door to the police station and they knew me VERY well so when I called they were there within 5 minutes. It also helps that I'm from a small town so you can get anywhere within 10, maybe 15 minutes at the most.

I think it's kinda dumb that officials, if attacked, have to just stand there and take it and can't fight back.....I mean, yeah you have to set the example, but you look like a wuss doing it...

The article I read about this was a bit less strident. I don't know which one is correct, but it said that Clemens was more of less sitting in a chair when the Ump came to him and a seed "hit the cuff" of his pants.

I'm not sure that indicates he spit at the official, but rather at the ground. The supervisor who backed the ump up was on a different field at the time of the incident and was called over.

Clemens, according to eyewitnesses, and the supervisor of officials, was respectful and left the field without an argument -- giving out autographs, including to the kid involved in the disputed play with his son. The other boy's dad used the word "respectful." He also said his son admitted he missed the tag on Clemens' son.

As I said, I certainly wasn't there, but this sounds like something that got a little out of hand. It might even be possible that the young ump might have been grandstanding a bit.

You know how those people in Colorado can be.

If the above is true, I find it ridiculous that this story even made the news.

That's what it sounds like to me. It's really not much of an issue. He was asked to leave and he did so without a fuss. I don't see how's he's setting a bad example for his kids.
If he did spit the seed at the ump, it sounds like it was an accident. I see it as the ump trying to be a big shot.

I don't know...although I had a few experiences freshman year that have kept me from wearing a Yankees shirt in Boston since that time.
