Question An English girl confused in Texas!

I went to college in England and now I'm applying to UH for the spring semester, but I don't have a clue about what sororoties are all about! They get a pretty bad rep in England about initiations and hazing, so I'm not sure if they're a good thing to get involved in.

I have no idea what 'rushing' or 'pledging' is, if the women live in the same house, if the initiations are as bad as I've heard, what recommendations are all about, whether masters students are allowed to join... I'd really like to learn a little bit more about them and whether they are a good idea to join. It all looks a little bit daunting to an English girl! Can anyone help me out?!

What you can probably do is check out the websites for the individual sororities that are in your school. Then you can get an idea of what they are all about b/c every sorority has something different to offer.
Hazing is not allowed or tolerated. Most of what you have heard are myths & yes stuff has happened before but hazing of any kind is not tolerated.
The term "pledging" or "pledge" are no longer used. Instead, you have what is called a new member period & a girl that has not been initiated by a sorority is called a new member.
Though I can't tell you what initiation entails b/c it's completely different for every sorority, I can tell you that it is nothing bad nor will you be hurt.
I hope this helps!

EDIT: If UH means University of Houston, then there are 6 NPC sororities on campus.

CuriousBrit-I go to UH and if u have any questions about rushing/recs and going thru recruitment in the fall i can help you with that.Just PM me.

Hazing and any other illegal acts do not occur in my chapter and in the other NPC chapters at UH. I can say that for sure.Initiaions are sacred and very meaningful to that organization, and nothing to be scared of, it's something to cherish and share with your sisters.

here is the panhell website at UH http://www.uh.edu/panhellenic

Read this site: http://www.freewebs.com/sororityrush/

Please head over to the forum titled "Rush" for more.

And DO call your university's office of student activities and Greek Life. This office can tell you all about the sorority recruitment process at your school, dates, attire, etc., as well as a bit about the sororities at your school.

Good luck!
