I bet Alberta will be the last province to approve same sex marriage.

They'd need a change of government. Klein admits he'll use the nonwithstanding clause to ban if neccessary. And Klein isn't about to be booted from government anytime soon.

I was thinking the same thing myself - that's if the house and senate don't pass it first and make it legal throughout Canada

Well I'd love to see it happen... but you know Alberta will resist any Canada-wide legality... Alberta is the home of Canadian Neo-Conservitive politics and a movement to court the religious right like in the US.

The day that Alberta passes this legislation is the day I move to France. And that just ain't going to happen, y'all.

But what if they do, under pressure from the rest of the country? You never know....

Obviously as somewhat of a newbie I don't know that much about Alberta's history. But from what I gather, Alberta rarely -- if ever -- bends to pressure from the rest of the country.
That's what I love about Alberta. As long as they're part of the confederation, I'll never be truly complacent.

This is very important because the twelve gay people who live in Saskatchewan can now get married like everyone else.

I don't see that happening anytime soon either. It's more likely that the individual provinces and territories will pass their own legislation to allow gay marriages first before Canada as a whole.

The Alberta girl weighs in ....
Well, it will be a while beofre Alberta passes it, but as for Klein - he is looking to lead the PC's to a win, then step down within the year. Things could change just with that...
Considering that the PC's have been in power since 1971 (yes, really - even Don Getty as premier couldn't f**k it up) and that Alberta has only had 4 parties ever be in gov't (and no repeats - really), it says that Albertan's will put up with a lot of crap internally.
1905 - 1921 - Liberals
1921 - 1935 - United Farmers of Alberta (pol. party)
1935 - 1971 - Social Credit (they won NINE elections!)
1971 - present - Progressive Conservative (to date, the PC's have won nine as well and looking for #10 at the end of the month)
There is a growing dislike of Klein's stance on many things, so it will be interesting to see how the provincial election rolls out at the end of month. (Thus my heistation to move back).
Cheers,
Shala

Holy crap!! I just think I felt hell freeze over...
Herr Klien in Alberta has actually asked for public opinion on the issue of same-sex marriage.
Course he wants people to send him information and opinion to be sent into to him.... so let the letter writting campaign begin.
