Greek representation good or bad?
Just a question for greeks in general from an outsiders point of view. Just wanted an honest opinion on things I see greeks do. A lot of people question the purpose of greeks because of the bad press you guys get. Not just from the pledge stories, but I don't see a lot of the values exhibited that these organizations were founded for. I sparsely see community service work and see a whole lot of showboating and beef between the frats and sororities when I thought everybody is for the same common cause. I know that there are bad apples in every basket and I know that every individual is responsible for there own actions. However, I thought that greek organizations chose individuals to represent the organization and brothers/sisters share the same valuse and are suppsoedly on one accord. However, I see fights over stuff like walking on each other plots, step shows, and even greeks taking nalia from each other. I myself have gave greek life a long hard look and am very interested but am sometimes discouraged when I see my friends who are in frats go through bull for just walking around with their letters on. As far as direction of greek life, where do you guys see it going. Originally, the black greeks were created as a positive outlet for black college students as they weren't accepted in the early 1900's. They were very proactive in the civil rights movements, but what now. I appreciate any feedback.

I apologize to all greeks if I have offended anyone but I was just seeking an honest opinion. I never expected any backlash. Really didn't think that the subject was that sensitive to where I would individuals would not want to speak on the matter. If there was anything wrong with what I said forgive me. I wonder if would be different if I were greek?

I'll indulge you my friend. This is pure and simple without a lot of bs.
Back in teh early 1900s ALL BLACKS were proactive, not just GREEKS.
Now Blacks are fighting over alot of BS, you got bands fighthing each other. Rappers fighting each other, football teams fighting. R&B singers (although I don't know why those SOFT azz dudes are fighting). But to make this short, Most Black Greeks are still doing positive things. It's just the bad ones get more AIRTIME. It's like a airplane crash, it's bad, but how many times have you heard of a plane accident?
Your friends went through pretty much the same bull as those people in the early 1900s went through, who do you think came up with that. Pledging didn't pop up in the mid 80s.
My question to you sense you don't see alot of community service work. Why dont' you go out there and do some? Greeks don't have a monopoly on Community services.

I do brother. Did I ever say I didn't? I am currently a member of Big Brother Big Sisters, Hands on Altanta, Housing Peer Review Board, and choreographer for a dance team at my church.

Yeah air plane crashes are tragic and very rare compared to the number of flights that travel daily but crashes are unavoidable in a sense. Nonsense is. There is no excuse for it.

Nobody is excusing it because I have no problem with lowering the boom on knuckleheads but......
to condemn HUNDREDS UPON THOUSANDS of people based off of a few incidents is irresponsible at best. Don't judge the whole based off of your experiences at YOUR campus or area. Trust all NHPC are 1,000 times bigger than your slice of the world.
True the old school of Black Greek Orgs were MORE PROACTIVE than today, I'll give you that. BUT BLACK AMERICA as a whole was more pro-active. It's not like we sunk to new lows while NON-GREEKS are uplifting our race and not fighting over bs

True that. So where do you see the direction of greek life going? Do you think that it is going to take something as drastic as another civil rights movement to get not only greeks but blacks as a whole to be more service oriented. Do you see it improving on its own?
There are chapters of many frats/sororities that focus on bad things. My cousin belongs to one of those chapters. They pride themselves with having brutal processes which may make them better brothers or at least they believe so. Anyways, they pride themselves as being the hardest frat on their yard and keep up a lot of ish. In that case how does the situation change? How can someone with a different agenda come in and make a difference. I would hate to see them being changed forcefully due to suspension.

Time.
Time changes everything. Sometimes something must go through a bad period until good comes in. It's the natural order of things. As a people we will get tired of the nonsense and rise up against it. Just like we got tired of taking the crap that White America gave us and we rose. This is just another hurdle and in my mind the FINAL hurdle that we must overcome. It's been said that your hardest opponent is yourself.
