oh man i'm watching this too. at first i thought the girl was really raped but the more i watched the show, the more i am convinced that this girl is lying.

i mean listen to the sherriff. he was like: "i know that Katie was raped." and Oprah asked him why he knew and he says: "i just knew when i looked at her. it looked like something was wrong."

oh my god you have to be KIDDING me. the girl even mentioned to the guy that her dad was racist and if he found out about them, he would kill them both. she probably got knocked up so she told her father she was raped by this boy.

Today's show was a repeat. I think that the boy has been released and will be on Oprah again tomorrow.

^ that's awesome if it's true

i feel so bad for his family. they take him into their home and you can really tell how much this whole thing has affected their lives. it was so sad when the guy started crying about missing his parents and his brother (and his brother was crying too).

If this is the case I'm thinking of (took place in Georgia), they threw out the charge and the kid is going free.

I'm having problems posting web addresses today. The following was posted at CBS.com for May4,2004

(CBS/AP) The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday threw out a black high school football star's conviction and 10-year prison sentence for having sex with an underage white girl — a case that led to allegations of racism and heavy-handed prosecution.

Marcus Dixon, 19, was released on his own recognizance after 15 months behind bars. Dixon was joyfully reunited with his legal guardians, Ken and Peri Jones.

"It's a feeling that I just can't describe," Ken Jones told CBS News' Early Show. "I'm just so glad that he got to come home."

The court ruled 4-3 that Dixon, who was 18 at the time, should have been prosecuted solely on a lesser charge of misdemeanor statutory rape rather than aggravated child molestation.

Dixon had claimed he was targeted by prosecutors because he is black and the girl, who was 15 at the time, is white. His case drew protests from the NAACP.

Dixon was acquitted of rape but found guilty of aggravated child molestation, which carries a mandatory 10-year sentence, and statutory rape. The high court let stand the statutory rape conviction, punishable by up to a year behind bars — more time than Dixon served.

Ken Jones said he called Dixon after hearing about the decision. "Marcus was crying, I was crying," he said. "We were both doing the dance."

Prosecutor Leigh Patterson said she would ask the Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling.

Dixon was an honor student and star athlete at Pepperell High School in Rome, and his scholarship to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., was revoked after his arrest.

Dixon is scheduled to stand trial this month on a separate sexual battery charge for allegedly putting his hands in the shorts of a 14-year-old student.

He had sex with the younger student at a trailer after school in February 2003. The defense said the sex was consensual; prosecutors argued Dixon forced himself on the girl.

The girl testified that she tried to escape from the trailer, where she was working as a custodian, but did not scream or shout for help. "I was too scared. I was afraid he'd hit me or something," she said.

Dixon's case led some lawmakers to push for change in the state's mandatory sentencing law, and members of the state House black caucus broke into applause Monday when the court's ruling was announced.

"What a joy it is in our state to see justice for a young man," said state Rep. Alisha Thomas-Morgan.

Kweisi Mfume, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said the ruling is a victory against arbitrary law enforcement.

"We thought the law was being unfairly applied. Mandatory minimums just don't work. This is really more than a black-and-white case," Mfume said.

The girl's attorney, Mike Prieto, said: "It terrifies me the message this sends to all the young women in the state of Georgia when they're confronted with a star athlete who wants to have sex."

You could tell she was lying because she was kinda vague in some parts of the story (I think Oprah asked her at one point about if she was mad or angry or something to that effect and the girl goes "ya, I'm KINDA mad"...Oprah then went "KINDA?") You could also tell the tears she was crying were not real especially in comparison to the boy's tears. I feel really bad because it seemed like he was a good kid who had a lot going for him (w/college and everything). I'm pretty sure he's out--it was the on preview for today's show.

If you do a search on his name you will see other threads on this topic. Some probably have links to local (Atlanta area) papers with articles talking about the case and his release.

If I recall correctly, he had several colleges who said they would give him a full scholarship since Vandy recinded their's. I know there was a school in TN (Middle TN, I think?) and Morehouse in Atlanta, but I'm not sure where he decided to go, though.

it is a repeat and he is free now going to college. She was not even raped you CAN tell as per sherriffs saying she was. Unless he was in the room with them both at the time this happen how would he know.
I mean she was to upbeat and cried on cue. For someone who has been through a horrifying ordeal such as rape, do you think you would be able to go on tv and be upbeat and then all of a sudden turn cheery to boo hoing like she did. I also think like APhiBeach ...she mentioned her father is racist and would kill them both if they were together. it doesn't look right , smell right or sound right.

If I was raped i would be fumming mad not just kinda mad.

if she was raped, there would have been more evidence thant just "we could just tell by looking at her." that's such bull.

and what's even more terrible is that this turned into a racism issue instead of a rape issue

like i said earlier, i think the girl got pregnant (and either aborted the baby or miscarried) and somehow her parents found out. she got scared and said that she was raped.

There was a rape case at my school like this. Only thing it was two whites instead of black and white. It caused whole commotion and what not.

Another incident just last year was that 2 girls clamed they were sexually assualted in their room. It was completely false.

I am so glad that he guy is free now. That girl makes me sick! You could so tell that she was lying. And that sherrif is full of crap! You can't tell that someone has been raped just by looking at them. I hope he is successful in college and gets away from stupid people like that girl.
