Greek representation good or bad?

Just a question for greeks in general from an outsiders point of view. Just wanted an honest opinion on things I see greeks do. A lot of people question the purpose of greeks because of the bad press you guys get. Not just from the pledge stories, but I don't see a lot of the values exhibited that these organizations were founded for. I sparsely see community service work and see a whole lot of showboating and beef between the frats and sororities when I thought everybody is for the same common cause. I know that there are bad apples in every basket and I know that every individual is responsible for there own actions. However, I thought that greek organizations chose individuals to represent the organization and brothers/sisters share the same valuse and are suppsoedly on one accord. However, I see fights over stuff like walking on each other plots, step shows, and even greeks taking nalia from each other. I myself have gave greek life a long hard look and am very interested but am sometimes discouraged when I see my friends who are in frats go through bull for just walking around with their letters on. As far as direction of greek life, where do you guys see it going. Originally, the black greeks were created as a positive outlet for black college students as they weren't accepted in the early 1900's. They were very proactive in the civil rights movements, but what now. I appreciate any feedback.

I apologize to all greeks if I have offended anyone but I was just seeking an honest opinion. I never expected any backlash. Really didn't think that the subject was that sensitive to where I would individuals would not want to speak on the matter. If there was anything wrong with what I said forgive me. I wonder if would be different if I were greek?

Lightbulb Good Question????

I myself am a member of Iota Phi Theta fraternity Inc. and before I placed my self in a position to pledge, I was in your shoes. Thinking the same thing about what I saw and heard about the whole greek life thing. One thing that you have to realize is that once you become apart of an organization, you have to make up in your mind that you either want things to stay the way they are or do YOU want to try and make a difference within your organization to end all of the negative outlets. I know you may be thinking how do we stop the beefing and fights? Well, it all starts at home. And when I say that I mean the chapter itself. You can end all stereotypes by doing what you are suppose to within your school or community. For example, there are now four brothers of I Phi now at Grambling State University, and because of some things that happened between some other organizations in the Pan, there are only three social frats, including us, that can be active for the next couple of years. Yeah we could have been apart of that mess but for what cause? We all made up in our mind that we wanted people to respect us by us respecting them FIRST!! It varies from chapter to chapter. It always comes down to the individual. People have different reasons for pledging. Some good and some bad. That is what the pledging process comes it to see who is really who they say that they are. A lot of times people put up bravados just to prove their loyalty for the period of time that they are pledging and when they are done, they become who they really are. Lazy stones in the the frat.

Another thing is that some organizations try to hold on to their tradition of being what they are so called "stereotyped" to be and that causes a problem sometimes. When these people become in a frat, they feel as though they are better than anyone else because they were so called "chosen" to be in a fraternity. And you know what happens when men that have large egos get in a tight area; FIGHTS!! (Bruhs you are going to like this part) That is why I chose this great organization.

"Building a Tradition and not resting upon one"

We are all different and the fratenity wants you to express who you are with your own style and individuallity!! I believe when the founders had this in mind, they wanted to attract people with the same morals but different pesonalities to do a work for us as a people. I believe this is why my fraternity is growing, because we are not always the BUFF ONES, the WELL DRESSED ONES, the so called VERY SMART ONES, the. . . . . .(I do not know what their stereotype is. LOL)! We are usually the ones who want to make a difference by serving others in what ever service that we can provide. And with that being said, I believe that my fraternity is just going to keep growing and adding the right people and the ones that are not producing good fruit through his labor will just fall to the way side. I hope this reply will give you some enlightenment of what to expect if you decide to join an organization.
