Hi Everyone,
I registered this domain name because I am interested in starting up a dating/personals site catering to members of fraternities/sororities. Unlike most sites, I don't want to charge anything to meet people, I just want to use advertising to recover my expenses. I want to start at my school first (Purdue) and see where it goes from there. Anyways, I'm just looking for some feedback here. Is this something that you all think might be popular? Suggestions?
Also I know pretty much nothing yet about web design. Could someone who is familiar with this give me some basic idea of how much web space I would be needing, and what tools would be neccessary to create/manage such a site?
Thanks!

The design is the least of your worries...it's the database that holds it all together that will take work. But luckily for you there are a ton of scripts already written by people out there for this kind of stuff.

Co-sign. While the design is key, it's all the scripting and data-base keeping that should be something you worry about. Especially if you are going to have people keeping personal information on it. Or you can just have it be a message board type of deal where people just meet and greet like they do here.
However, if you are looking for the next Match.com, definitely look into something simple and user friendly. Avoid anything animated, blinking, flashing... (unless they are the banner ads). Things like those, to me, make a site lose credibility. And at all costs, avoid the font Comic Sans.

i have a friend who builds message boards and whatnot for college students all across the country. he started one up at State about 4 years ago and now he's done one for most major schools in the nation. if you want his contact information, i can get it to you.....maybe he can give you some tips.
ps - this friend also started up a national personal site that includes all different schools meshed onto one board

I see a lot of different languages (ASP, XML, etc) with all these scripts. How do i know which one is right for me? Is a software package going to be neccessary for me to be able to manage edit these scripts? Any info would be appreciated.

I guess just pick one. They each have their advantages. Some are newer than others. Most can be edited using a simple text editor though and maybe you should choose a good script first and then worry about what language it's in.

That makes sense. I think i'm just in way over my head here. I don't know anything about this, so i'm thinking I will look around for someone who is interested in helping me out. I'll take care of the advertising/marketing part which I actually know about.

Good idea. You are bound to find some good web programmers in your fraternity. Or ask some computer science majors. They will know more about programming and code.

What a great idea! One of my sisters does web design, she is actually a member of Greek Chat too. PM me and I'd be glad to give you here info. This sounds like a nice way to meet others with the common bond of being Greek. Most of my boyfriends (and current one) have NOT been Greek and do not understand why I love it so much, even as an alumna. Good luck!

my friend who created the college message boards also created something called: crazyweb which helps with the setup of designing a message board type system

great software: DREAMWEAVER
i use it for our site, and it makes design so so much easier, because you can view it as code, or as it will look on the page, or both, and you can edit in both formats.
