Iguanas---- Bearded Dragons
Does anyone have an iguana--or experience with them? My son wants a lizard for his bday. My mom said she would buy him a lizard. She went to the pet store tonight, the guy told her an iguana would be the best choice.
My son will be turning 6yrs old. I realize I will be doing most of the work, but how is an iguana for a pet in general?
Thanks,
Wendi

All I know is it's supposedly dangerous to "nuzzle" & "cuddle" them, so if you're son's really hands-on cuddly with animals, maybe this isn't the best choice.

Aww you could name is Iggy!
However, I'm not so sure it'd be that fun to watch. I'd say go with a hamster or something. Then you could buy one of those really cool cages and watch it for hours!
I duno much about reptiles, but when my friends and I were younger, one of their lizards/iguana/whatever got loose and ran up the tree. I don't remember if it ever came down.

LOL thats funny cuz, I've had 3 iguanas my first one was names iggy, the second was kioku, and the third was spike. They are great cuz they are very friendly but you have to be concious as to wut u feed them, like give them fruit and diff kind of vegs. cuz they hav tastes jus like people do; they may like somethings more than others and if they dont like something they wont eat it. I think they are esp cool cuz they can hav personalities, my iguanas used to post up in the funniest positions and jus chill like that, you have to spend lots of time with them they cant just stay in the cage all the time, or it will stunt their growth and they will get depressed and stop eating. Its also wise not to hold them alot, so when they are out put them on the ground or branch or something. (Branches or something for them to climb is important, aslo water for them to swim in; but they all dont like to swim) so again that will b the iguanas preff. but they still need it though.
I know i typed a lot but, there plenty more were that came from so if u got questions or ne thing if u decide to get one jus let me know.

My brother had 2 Iguanas that he made this huge cage for. One of them was very social and liked people while other was a huge scaredy cat. She ultimately ended up jumping out of the window of his car on a trip home one time. They other one...YES named IGGY...he had for another year until they realized that the reason his wife kept getting sick was because of cleaning out the cage. They are a huge carrier of Sal manila. They ended up giving Iggy to a friend.
My brother also had a lot of snakes and leopard geckos. Now the snakes are not my favorites but the leopard geckos were awesome. We actually still have two of them. They love to be held and they are a lot less spiny.

I really don't know anything about Iguana's but my friend in high school had one. She had this HUGE cage for it. All I remember about it was that it didn't move much, so it seemed like a pretty boring pet to me...but maybe that was just her iguana?

So I saw the title of the thread and my first thought was:
"Wish I was in Tijuana
Eating barbecued iguana"
(you know someone would have said it sooner or later )

I bought an iguana when I was in highschool, and I thought I was original when I named it IGGY. LOL. Actually Iggy was one of my best pet, and he lasted for couple years and became super big and green. Then I went to college and he died

The only thing i know about iguanas is that one of my old bosses had one. She had terrible scars and scrathes on her forearms. For the longest time I thought she had been a cutter or had tried to slit her wrists.... then she mentioned they were scratches from her iguana.
Those were nasty........

My son is set on a lizard. We already have a bulldog, a cat (whom we adopted at a shelter), and a hermit crab.
I called another local pet store-- the helpful guy there said NO!!! an iguana is not a good pet for a 6yr old. We are decided against it (thanks for the info though).
We are going tomorrow to look at other lizards, as well as turtles. The pet store also has 3 pet iguanas that are all over 6 feet in length, so my son and I will be checking those guys out!
Thanks everyone!

My ex had two iguanas and they used to occasionally break out of their cages and climb up this clothes in his closet. It was so weird. You could always find them in the closet when you got home and they weren't in their cage.

We are home from the pet store. We did not buy an iguana, but still got a lizard. My son fell in love with a bearded dragon. It is about a year and a half old, about 14 inches long, very nice-jusr sat on our shoulders and looked around.
We tried to talk my son out of it--the lizard and the 40 gallong aquarium was a lot more than we wanted to spend. But end the end--he won. Everything is set up and on the entertainment ceter in his bedroom.
For the moment it's name is Lizzy--- so far (w/in 2 hours) it's name has been-- Scooby, George, Bernie and Lizzie.
The store has another dragon they can't "sell" with the others--as it is missing 4 toes on one foot-- I think we are now going back tomorrow for that one. They are charging about 1/4 the price for the toe-less one since we bought one today.
