NPC question

I am kinda of curious about something. In the divine 9 when we cross we have a *probate show or a neophyte show, or sometimes a party* to introduce who we are and etc. It is really one of the best things I was wondering, how do u get introduced to your peers, school or etc. I mean do yall have parties or How does this work..thanks

My collegiate chapter has a local tradition called "Presents". I know that not all AGD chapters do this, but we started the tradition shortly after my chapter was installed, and many of the ideas were fashioned from Presents of the past from our old chapters in Southern California.

Presents is held shortly after New Member Service, not after the girls are initiated. Family members, other Greeks, and representatives of the University are usually in attendance.

Weeks later, after Initiation, each chapter of AGD celebrates Feast of Roses, our formal celebration of our Fall Initiates. Family, husbands, and other important individuals are invited to attend.

At my school all the organizations put ads in the local campus newspaper saying "congrats to our new member class!" and then lists the names. That's done right after the new member ceremony-shortly after bid day. That's it though.

Yeah @ DePaul the NPC sororities make a banner or a sign announcing their newest members. I've never seen a formal presentation comparable to what NPHC sororities do.

There is a 3-story main lobby at my school through which most students have to go to get to classes. Back in the day, any recognized student group could hang "drop posters" that hung from the 3rd floor balcony almost to the lobby floor. Typically, sororities would hang drop posters right after bid day to announce their new members, then again after initiation to announce their new sisters.

The designs almost always tied into the sororities' symbols. We would do a giant lily of the valley with a different name painted on each flower; Theta would do a kite with a different name painted on each kite tail; etc.

Since that lobby was renovated, drop posters have gone away. I'm not sure what is done now.

What a lovely tradition!!

I'm afraid that my school just did the ad in the newspaper bit, too.

Wouldn't an All-Greek Presents be a wonderful idea?

New Member Preview

Some, if not all of the sororities at USF have a New Member Preview, which is like a crush party. The idea is to introduce our new member class. This is how my sorority does it. Each member can invite individual fraternity men, then we go in to fraternity chapter meetings with invitations. Those men invited receive personal invitations, and the entire fraternity is also invited to attend. We usually hold this event at a club in Ybor City, and it's a semi-dressy event. Sisters wear black dresses and new members wear any kind of colored dress, so they stand out because it's their night! During the event, the new members are announced and escorted by their big sister. We either walk down a staircase, or down a runway through the middle of the place up to the club's stage. It's really fun, and gives the new members the spotlight. And since it's a crush party, the girl to guy ratio is definitely in our favor
Ours is called KD Kisses, Tri Delt's is Pearl Preview, ADPi's is Pi Passion...we all have cute names for it, but the guys don't care, as long as they're invited to all of them!

Some of the sororities also do the newspaper ad where they name all their new members, which is a really nice thing to see in our paper, since it rarely includes anything to do with Greek Life.

My school has a "Greek Debut" every fall, where the entire greek community goes to a ballroom on campus, and each organization on campus, sororities and fraternities, get an opportunity to introduce their new members for that fall, plus their newly initiated members from last spring. Most organizations dress up, girls all wearing the same color dress, etc. It's a really great way to get to know people in other organizations, and a fun way for each organization to present their newest members!

We do a serenade about 3-4 weeks (depending on weather) into the new member period and introduce our new girls during that - and we have a banquet after initiation where they're also introduced.

I always thought that was cool, even though, in typical Pitt Greek fashion, it was pretty understated It was always fun to see the other sororities' ads and find out who went where.

Do they still do this at Pitt?

Yeah- no fraternity at Iowa State really does anything fun or fancy to introduce our members to other GLOs or the campus in general- but I have heard of some IFCs that do some sort of shout-out event where the rush chair and pledge educator get on stage and read off the names of their pledge class and the guys come up and get props or something.

Seems to me the sororities have the fun activities showing off their new members. This spring I was at the Sigma Lambda Gamma Coming Out to see my roommate introduced as one of the latest neophytes.

Our Memorial Union has a place for banners- I should see if anyone else in my colony would be interested in hanging a banner that congratulates our new members this fall.

At NMSU we have new member presentation which is kind of like what Cardinals is like. Except we do it twice a year(once a semster) and it usually coincides with when we get the awards for the previous semester and when they announce big things like who got recruitment counselor and things like that. Its a blast to see which girls go where and seeing all the new fresh meat with the fraternities.

We also have serenades where almost every fraternity goes to the sororities and introduce their new members. No one said this so I'm not sure if other schools do this but we have new member socials. Where like our new members have a social with the new member class of different fraternities. It gives our NMs a chance to meet their partner NM classes.

Way back when at ASU we had Pledge Presents (at the the org I was apart of did) and it was the Fall Formal...it was also the awards banquet.

We also put in announcement of the new pledge classes in the newspaper... I think all Greek Life did. This was back in '91 so things could have changed.

Are there any current ASU Greeks on the board to explain what is done today?

I would love to see an all-Greek Presents at my school. Unfortunately, we're the only NPC sorority at the moment, but it'd be lovely to get us and the locals on the same page.

Normally only the Fraternity men our Presents ceremony, and back in the day they'd be our "escorts" and escort the new baby squirrel down the stairs to be presented to everyone.

I still keep in touch with some of the ladies from the local sororities, and we'd share our pledge experiences. I know one started doing a "Carnation Ceremony" for their pledges as a way of presenting their pledges (as they're still called by them) to other Greeks and their parents.

But don't worry, we still take out a half a page in the Ka Leo to congratulate our new members!
