Kudos to Magic Johnson
Magic Opens Computer Center in Hometown
Mon May 19, 1:16 PM ET
LANSING, Mich. - Magic Johnson has opened centers in Atlanta, Chicago and Houston devoted to making sure every child knows how to use a computer.
Former basketball star Earvin 'Magic' Johnson joins Jennifer Lara, 9, a fourth grader at Public School (P.S.) 96 in Manhattan's East Harlem section , as she use a computer at the Magic Johnson and HP Inventor Center at Taino Towers in New York, Wednesday Dec. 18, 2002. The new technology center, a community initiative from Hewlett Packard Computers and the Magic Johnson Foundation, is aimed at bridging the digital divide in inner cities. The center is the eighth and join others in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Chicago. P.S. 96 students will use the center twice weekly in an after-school program. Last week, the Lansing native opened one in his hometown.
The 11th Magic Johnson HP Inventor Center at Lansing's Black Child and Family Institute features $60,000 in equipment donated by Hewlett-Packard Co.
"Young people need to be guided," Johnson told the Lansing State Journal. "They need to be touched. They need to know someone cares about them. They have that here."
The center has 20 computers, printers, digital cameras and a digital projector. It is open to the public except when in use by a special class or session.
About 300 people stood in the rain and cold Thursday to hear Johnson speak.
"It's one of the most wonderful things to happen since Magic was on the basketball court," Lansing resident Claudine Walker said about the center.
Johnson led his Everett High School basketball team to the state championship in 1977 and Michigan State University to the NCAA (news - web sites) title in 1979.
The computer centers are part of a partnership between HP and the Magic Johnson Foundation. Five more are planned in cities including Cleveland and Baltimore.

I was not very knowledgeable about Magic's philanthropic activities before he was diagnosed with HIV, but I must say that brotha has definitely stepped it up since his diagnosis.

Magic has been been doing this kinda stuff for a long time, but as you said, he has stepped it up since he retired. Magic was well known for his support of the United Negro College Fund back in the day. He was an honorary spokesperson for a while and sponsored "Magic's Midsummer's Night Dream"--a basketball tourney and college fair in LA every summer to support UNCF.
He visited Spelman when I was a student there and I had the pleasure of meeting him and taking him on a tour of the campus. Very nice man!!

On Magic
Lots have held Magic up as a great example of a person who is a capitalist, who does use the economic system to create jobs and wealth, but who does it in a non-exploitative, non-degrading manner, unlike one other wealthy AfAm individual named Johnson.

That Johnson you refer to happens to be my frat brother. Having said that, it doesn't mean that I haven't questioned his business ethics. BET could have been an empowering thing for AA, but instead of help in only further perpetuated the negative stereoptypes about AA. Way to go Magic. We need more AA involved with money to help lessen the digital divide.

See, I always thought that Bob Johnson was an Alpha. I was having a discussion about how BET had not lived up to all of its potential and one of my friends, who is an Alpha, refused to admit any of Johnson's shortcomings because he "couldn't talk bad about frat in public."
Maybe this post should be under the inaccurate fraternity members thread.

Bob is definitely a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. I have never heard him identified as an Alpha.

Very true about Bob Johnson. On the other hand, at least he's been up-front in the few media interviews he's done about the fact that he works from a capitalist mindset. So you know where he's coming from, which is better than someone who fronts.
It just speaks to the fact that we need our own PBS or something like that to provide an alternative, but that's a whole new thread.

Magic Johnson
(Feb. 18, 2004) *Magic Johnson is always making moves, and he's just made another one. He has announced plans for the MagicCash Visa Debit Card.
A product of Magic Cards International, Inc., a subsidiary of Celebrity Cards International, Inc., the cards’ target audience is the 70-80 million under -banked and credit challenged individuals in the US alone.
Celebrity Cards’ philosophy is to market the cards through outsourcing to leaders in each industry; partners in this project include Bank of America, VISA, and AMN Television Marketing, the largest direct response company in the country, and West Telemarketing.
The launch of the national advertising campaign for the MagicCash Card is the second week of April with the national rollout of the card following.
A foundation is being established to fund free financial management training, credit counseling and to assist in helping MagicCash card holders to build credit.
An official announcement of the Magic Johnson MagicCash Visa Debit Card will be made next week in Los Angeles
