Kerry/McCain...

I'm a little surprized nobody has started a thread about the rumors that Kerry has approached John McCain to run on the Democratic ticket for VP.

So, here it is.

As McCain has said:

#1: No chance

#2: Kerry's campaign has been the only one doing any contacting. Kerry's campaign has said that all of the reported 'contacting' were nothing more than 'overtures' whatever that means.

Not going to happen.

Look like it's going to be Kerry/Edward.

ETA: How about another Republican, Sen. Chuck Hagel, to be Kerry's running mate?

If that is the case, then so much for the insistence of some that Hillary will be #2 on the ticket.
I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for THAT little power struggle. I think it demonstrates that Kerry's folks have gained a little on the McAuliffe/Clinton axis of influence.

He said no. People make attacks on McCain and talk about how he's a Democrat in disguise. He is anything but. The same thing goes for those who say Lieberman is a Republican. Anything but. But then again, these people are probably not interested in facts and figures.

McCain is about as conservative as they come in many respects. Maybe not "socially". But real conservatism does not care about things like gay marriage and abortion. That's a Fundamentalist religious perversion of conservatism.

I can see how people might be easily confused though.

That religious Christian movement you refer to a historically Democratic movement. It sways from party to party on occasion (it voted largely Democratic through Carter until Reagan) and even now is considered wavering.

It's not going to happen; McCain is more conservative than people give him credit for, and there's no way he would run on a Democratic ticket.

Kind of off topic, but does anyone have any stats on just how much of a divider social issues like abortion and gay marriage are? I honestly didn't think that those were real dividing lines between the parties anymore.

I think that social issues are definitely dividing lines between parties. Conservative social issues drew me to the Republican party to begin with. I couldn't identify with the views that I heard Democratic candidates speak in support of.

I know there are some social issues that may be dividing lines...but I just didn't think abortion and gay rights were chief among them anymore.

I agree with quite a few of the conservative issues of the Republicans...it's a big reason I changed parties (actually just after the Gore/Bush election).

These probably are, in fact, rumors.

However, I think it's realistic to point out that whenever something of this nature comes out, it is invariably denied by at least one if not both sides.

McCain obviously has aspirations for the Presidency. IF he were to decide to run with Kerry -- and IF they won, he could be running in four to eight years from a much stronger position. Of course, in this era, age could become a factor.

I suspect that this senario will not happen, however we just buried a former President who changed parties...

For that matter, I'm not aware of anything in the Constitution that prohibits members of different parties running together.

Wouldn't that be interesting?

Where did you get that they were only rumors?

I heard a rumor that they were rumors.

Actually, good point. I don't know whether the alleged discussions were held or not.

True, but McCain blatantly said on Hannity&Colmes a week or so ago that there was no way he was going to be Kerry's runningmate, in fact, he is currently campaigning for Bush.

This is a ploy by the Kerry campaign to have the public associate him with someone of honor. This automatically makes many people think they are friends and political allies. Sad, but it will work.
