University of Georgia may lose its name

After 219 years, the University of Georgia could become the school with no name.

UGA's already messy divorce from its fund-raising organization took a nasty, unexpected twist Thursday: It turns out that the university doesn't hold the trademark to its own name. Instead, in papers filed last year, the University of Georgia Foundation has declared itself the owner of all things labeled "University of Georgia."

In doing so, the nonprofit foundation asserted control over every commercial use of the university's moniker, from UGA-embossed coffee mugs to boxer shorts — to "education services, namely providing instruction at the college level," according to its trademark papers.

It's not clear how the trademark filing will affect a yearlong dispute over attempts by some foundation trustees to oust UGA President Michael Adams. But the name issue puts a new spin on the state Board of Regents' decision Tuesday to end UGA's 67-year relationship with the foundation.

Even if they were forced to call themselves "Georgia" -- which is what most people in that state call UGA anyway -- they'd still be instantly recognizable.

There's already Georgia State University and Georgia Southern University.

I guess I don't understand - why would the foundation divorce itself from the university in the first place? Isn't its sole purpose to support the university?

This is reminicent of the fight between my Alma Mater Ohio University and THE Ohio State University (snicker, that just seems so pompus to me).

Ohio State was trying to copyright the word "Ohio" as well as Ohio State, OSU, etc. The whole thing regarded licensing of hats, sweatshirts, etc., although some Ohio State cheers and athletic uniforms simply said Ohio as opposed to Ohio State -- and OSU's stadium in Columbus is named Ohio Stadium.

(Poster's admittedly biased note: Ohio University was founded in 1804 and had been "Ohio" since then. Ohio State was founded in 1870, and as I grew up in Columbus was always called "OSU" or simply "State.")

It even made the TODAY Show (Matt Lauer being an Ohio University graduate) and almost made it to court.

Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and the two university presidents got together as good friends and settled it.

Haven't read the article, but this stems back to a fight between the foundation and the University President. They are pretty unhappy with him for a number of things, including some things that foundation and university money were spent on, and--this is the biggie in my opinion--the fact that he did not play proper homage to the god of UGA, Vince Dooley--former football coach and athletic director--by renewing his AD contract.

The foundation pays part of the president's salary and I think they have stopped.

Reminds me of PCU.

They should just have the animal house fraternity steal the mascot at the Biennial Celebration and then have the President get caught saying some few choice words along with members of the top snot fraternity and they all get brought down.

Red face

Holy S*it Bat ZEKE.

Damn, this crap is getting out of hand or is it just me?

Not really sure if an Alum Association can really disinfranchise a State U. from a name!

Now, my question is, who are these deminted asses?

Well meaning, not, just stupid!

Is not the State College system run with a Board of Regents who are approved by the State?

God in todays poitlical perfect climate, the Idiots abound!

Well, guess will wait for updates from La La Land!
