Rats!

I was just told that I could not be married & still be an active sister. I would have to go alum when it happens. That is so depressing b/c I really wanted to enjoy one more year with Sigma Kappa. People have told me that my priorities will change after I get married but I just don't agree. He has never begrudged the time I spend with the girls & he likes knowing that I actually do have a life outside of this relationship. My world does not revolve around him. I haven't broken the news to the ladies of my house yet.
I'm so sad. I didn't want to go alum yet but it looks like I'll have to.

I thought it was a choice that you were able to make. Did someone from your chapter tell you this or someone from Nationals? If it was your chapter, I would definately contact Nationals and ask them.

Whomever told you that you have to go Alum lied to you because its actually the exact opposite. Per the handbook married members must remain active. If you choose to go alum you have to submit a petition.

Check out the handbook in the Sisters Only section of the Sigma Kappa web site, and make sure you share that info w/ whomever gave you the wrong information!

Someone is screwing with you. One of my pledge sisters was married the whole time she was in the chapter, and she was one of the best members we had. Another one chose to go alum when she got married, but it's not required. You do NOT have to leave the chapter when you get married.

About 3 years ago when I first came in we had a president that was married. The year after the other president got married during her presidency. Those were the best presidents we had in our chapter. You can look in National policy about married actives, it does not say that you have to go alum, you have that option but you don't have to. I say do what ever you little heart desires.

Our VPAR was the one who told me as well as many other sisters. I'm starting to think that b/c there has never been a married sister in our chapter, everyone is assuming that I'd have to go alum. I'm definitely checking this out in the Handbook & asking Nationals specifically. My poor guy was with me when I received the news (e-mail) & had to try to cheer me up b/c he knows how much this means to me.

Thanks for all your help! I'll let you all know how it turns out!

Yeah they are definitely lying to you. We had one girl come in and pledge, and she was married and had 2 kids. You can definitely be an active and be married!

I wouldn't say lying, I would just say that it is likely they are misinformed since they have never delt with this issue before.
