William Hung Rant

[Rant]

As an Asian man who wants to promote my people for reasons other than the typical stereotypes the media has placed on us, I'm sick and tired of this moron. It seems that most of the time, whenever there's an Asian on TV, there's some uncontrollable element that makes him/her out to look stupid/naive/clueless/FOBish.

He was booed, taunted and heckled during a Nets-Pistons game where performed during halftime, and was reportedly shocked afterwards that he didn't get a good response.

There's a reason for that Will: YOU CAN'T SING.

You weren't in California where oddities and entertainment take precedence over blue collar work and effort. This was Detriot, those people who spent all that money did not spend it to see a crappy novelty.

This guy's 15 minutes are up, and we already know the only reason this shit keeps going on is because he's making money for people...but enough already. You're a disgrace to Asians everywhere and I hope you get laughed at whatever UC school took you.

[Sarcasm] Further proof that the cool Asians went to State schools, not UC[/Sarcasm]

[/Rant]

Stan...

Here's an on-point essay by David Ng about William Hung. It's from the Village Voice, but don't let that affect your perception.

http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0414/ng.php

I've also seen articles critiquing the Hung-mania, and one of them has a serrating title, but he makes good points:

I loved this line...

"The thing is, he's studying to be an engineer at UC Berkeley, and the market for dancing engineers is probably not so great."

CTHU. But on a serious note, I hope that Mr. Hung is saving his money for when his 15 minutes is up, which I hope is soon.

As someone who was called "white-washed" and "Uncle Tom" by Asians my age, I'm not surprised that it's these same people that are giving him his novelty.

"For Asian Americans, Hung represents everything we don't want to be seen as (foreign, nerdish, a joke), and thus his oddball fame reinforces our own happily assimilated identities."

Wouldn't finding his novelty be somewhat sadist. Deep down this guy knows we're laughing AT him, and people are taking PLEASURE in it.

I'm one of the many people who always say "get over it" or shrug shit like this off. But he's an embarassment to all those hard working Asians who try to deviate from that stupid, geeky stereotype as well as the rice rocket stigma.

my bf really likes william hung. he even bought his cd. he likes him because of his sincerity i guess like at the end of his audition how he said he tried his best or whatever. everyone else who auditioned, did poorly, and got criticized, turned around and bad mouthed the judges. i admit that after listening to a few songs on the cd, i got bored/irritated, because it is bad singing. oh well, the hype has been going down. it'll fade out in awhile.

in a year people will be asking "william WHO?" That is unless Ryan Seacrest keeps bringing up his name in every show.

Let it die!

I think that he's probably more savvy than people are giving him credit for. I think he's riding this for all it's worth. I can't imagine he's not saving some dough.

He would have to be. I've heard some stuff about his Dad and how money-hungry he is. And as an aside, he got booed at one of the NBA playoff games last night.

I would wager that he side steps into TV or motion pictures. At least a few. There is no such thig as bad publicity. And someone will want to capitalize.

Who ever saw the movie Shakespeare in love? Remember when they put the little dog into the scenes for comic relief?

When I saw that i realized just how long that tradition has gone on. People like the ridiculous. The cruder the better.

In almost every movie out you see a serious character given a side kick . . for comic relief.

Much to the annoyance of serious people everywhere.

I seriously hope you're right... and hopefully they'll take him off the radio, too. There was a reason why I didn't listen to KIIS FM in the past... and now I never will

There was a lil story about him on one of our Detroit radio stations a few weeks ago. I wish I could remember the whole thing but I know it had to do with something about his mom said he wouldn't do an event or something unless he was getting paid and they wanted like breakfast paid for or something.

I know sounds stupid... I wish I remembered the whole thing.
