Non-Greeks reading books about Greeks

I've been doing a bit of writing lately, and have come up with a chicklit story that has GLOs as a part of its storyline. One scene has girl A tell girl B that she's having issues because her fiance's family is notoriously anti-GLO and that she basically has to hide the fact that she's involved. My dad, who was born and raised in Hong Kong and is completely unfamiliar with the system (both from experience and the media...the only Greek-related anything that he's seen are bits and pieces of the "Legally Blonde" movies) thought that the scene was completely fake and unrealistic. I wrote it to basically dispel some myths people have about GLOs (though now I'm worried that I've made this fictitious sorority into a Martha Stewart organization because the philanthropy activities involve bake sales and selling crafts among other things). I had to explain to him that some people feel that GLOs are kind of elitist, etc even when they aren't. What do you think? Do you think people who aren't familiar with GLOs at all (like they're from another culture) would understand? I don't really want to explain too much because this story is told from the first person.
