I handled this the wrong way....
I was caught off guard. Someone much older is in xyz sorority and said today " By the way you know I'm a member of xyz sorority and I was talking to the Basileus today, by the way are you a member of a sorority" or interested in joining?." I kind of knew where it was headed, but I am not interested
in xyz, so I said "No I'm not a member, but I would love to join one but they haven't had a line in a longg time". I said this much so she'll know it's not xyz, cause they had a line not long ago and she was on it. She then goes "oh, tmg" I go "no, abc". the minute I said it I wanted to take it back-no discretion. Every time somebody asks me if I'm in a sorority or thought about pledging why do they always guess tmg? I have to fight hard not to feel that if they feel I'm tmg, then I'll never be abc.
A similar thing happened to me.A loud mouthed grad neophyte said in a room full of tmgs and abcs - "Oh I know you are going to pledge tmg". I stammered saying "I'm too old to pledge" I was so embarassed. Everybody stopped eating and looked at me, or at least it felt that way. When i spoke to one of the abcs later about my interest, she kind of looked at me like " Oh I thought you were interested in tmg". Or at least that's how I felt. However, she was very supportive.
What's a good response?

Lovely--
I recently had lunch with two very powerful women, one is a lobbyist and another is a SES-level executive.
Well I was discussing an upcoming trip to visit some friends and I commented on how I met them. Now I did not reveal the name of the site (S & S), but I stated the site's purpose in a matter-of-fact tone.
Later on, they both asked me if I was intersted in pursuing a sorority and which one. I politely told them I regarded my choice as personal and I did not share that information. While a bit "shocked", they completely understood and left it alone. One of the ladies smiled, as if she could understand where I was comimg from.
I usually say NOTHING to anyone except those who have known me and my pursuit for some time OR SF that I closely interact with that share the same pursuit.
Otherwise, its none of their business!
