I'm not a fan of women DJ's for the most part-a lot of them (like Reid Speed, DJ Rap, Sandra Collins, DJ Keri, Spacegirl, etc.) use their appearances to get booked @ parties, not their talent. I always love to hear about up & coming women DJ's though-as long as the music is good I'll always be willing to listen to it!

I was with you until you dissed Sandra Collins. They call her the mother of techno for a reason.

You have to see where I'm coming from. The "Mother of Techno" has been so sloshy drunk/fucked up everytime I see her play she isn't worth the gas money I spent to get to the venue.

Hey, don't be trashing Sandra just bcause you think she's a crackhead. Most DJs are crackheads or were at one time ( crackhead in the sense that they've been fucked up many times).
Yea, she's been fucked up many times while playing out. What DJ hasnt been? So what if she does coke on the vinoyl while its turning? Her music still sells. And BTW, she blew the fuck up at the winter music conference and Ultra 6. The only thing that used ot piss me off was the fact that sometimes she was a no show during her serious drug binges, but she has since redeemed herself with me being as we threw a party back in Gainesville and she made it. You have to give her some credit, she is good for a woman.

Listen, lets face it.....these days, shows dont sell like they did from the mid 1990's till 2002. That said, I can gurantee you that a show with DJ Rap, Miss Collins or Portia Surreal will sell out more than a show with someone along the lines of Crystal Method, Space Men, Christopher Lawrence, Simply Jeff or any other mediocre DJ/producers. Why? They play decent music and they look good. But they dont "sell" their bodies or use their appearances. Well, maybe portia surreal does since she spins naked....but thats another story. In any case, Sandra, DJ Rap, Babby Anne....none of them take their clothes off and show tits. None of them dress in skimpy outfits....hell, half of the time you cant even see the DJ in the booth at clubs unless they're on stage.

i'm throwing in my 2 cents.
I liked Sandra Collins. A friend let my listen to one of her shows via CD. I liked it.
While I am not all for drug use, if that's what it takes for her to make good music... well so be it.

I agree at many of her shows she's somewhat of a loose cannon...but I think lately she's cleaned up her act. Regardless, she HAS talent...I don't think she uses her body to be regarded as a DJ.

Usually all CD's sound good since they use computer's to help make the CD instead of recording live.
When I've seen Sandra Collins @ parties she hasn't played well. Ever. And I've seen her play over 10 times.
Baby Anne is another good example. Awesome CD's, horrible DJ. Another good example: DJ Irene. I've seen her live a time or two-true she gets the crowd pumped up but the music/mixing is awful!!!

i enjoy women dj's because a lot of time they appeal to the type of sounds that i enjoy-(i.e. not crazy heavy beats- something thats easy to dance to) i'm listening to dj heavygrinder right now- she's pretty good- not much different then what i've been hearing in europe though at fabric and turnmills (where i used to bartend) so i guess its nothing out of the ordinary- but its still good...
to note though- i've been into techno/house for awhile- but i'm not too "educated" in the scene- i'm getting better- (and being in london is definately helping- but there are SO many dj's- its hard to keep them all straight and know one from the other... its almost enough to keep me from paying attention to who is up there)

The CD Jen said she heard was a live CD, thus there were no computers being used.....unless it was a live PA instead of her just mixing records. But in any case, she's not a producers so assuming she'd be doing a live PA is irrelevant.
I agree with you on the fact that sometimes, in the past, Sandra's sets didnt sound the best when she was trashed beyond all assumption. Its a given, don't eat 12 rolls before you have to spin. However, she's a lot better about it now. I've seen heard her more times than I care to count. Yet, with baby anne, I think its the exact opposite. I think her CDs blow pipe steak. Yet, her live shows are better. One thing about Anne you need to understand....she's not known for her choice songs or tracks she's made/picks out in her sets. She's known for her mixing skills, that is blending in the music.....hence the name/album, "bass queen in the mix". As for Irene, seen her 4 times. Didnt like none of her sets.

DJ Irene is excellent when she's with Psychobitch. Teri Bristol- another great one.
I have enjoyed all three live.

Fabric got shut down, I believe. If it hasnt closed yet, it will be very soon. So, you worked at Gallery Turnmills? Nice place. I've been there to hear Paul Van Dyk in 2000 for May Day.
btw, most americans dont have the luxury of hearing the kind of music that is being played in London clubs, the Hague, Gate Crasher parties, Laugherton Hall, Cream field parties etc etc etc. Usually its only those of us who live in Florida, California and New York City who constantly get quality music. I'm jealous of you.
