bad Greek press - please check this out!

an open letter to the regulars (and everybody else!) of GreekChat:

There is a fictional movie about to open this fall and it is all about fraternity hazing, supposedly.

The producer or director, whichever he is, of the movie, is supposedly Greek, and the movie is supposedly based on a true story.

None of the above statements are the problem. The problem is that to generate buzz, the official movie website features a bulletin board with supposedly true hazing stories. It is all very sensationalized, and makes the entire Greek community look awful - I mean NPHC/NPC/IFC/ABC/XYZ, all of us... if you wear letters you will be disappointed in how this website is representing our community.

I would like to encourage all of you to take a look at this site, and to do what your heart feels is right. AND, if I am over-reacting, please feel free to step up and tell me! I certainly do not want to be one lone crazy girl on a soapbox over what might be no big deal.

another tidbit - someone who is affiliated with the movie has registered here as a user and has only posted or responded to topics that are related to or can be focused on the movie itself. Nice bit of infiltration for advertising purposes, huh?

hmmm, i just read the "sorority" thread near the top of the board started by "T. Wallace".... holy shit! has ANYTHING remotely like this happened on your campus?!? maybe i'm just naive but i wonder if someone's making these stories up. i can't IMAGINE my sisters doing stuff like that.... i mean, we're not a bunch of sexual predators....

This is a big wild world, and while I believe that something like this (the story that "T. Wallace" contributed) could possibly have happened at ONE TIME SOMEWHERE thirty years ago (but more likely he read it in Penthouse Forum) - this is NOT what Greeks are about today!!!!

But this movie is going to eradicate years and years of positive anti-hazing education and progress. I cannot believe that the writer/director is a member of a NATIONAL fraternity (Phi Kappa Tau). How embarrassed his brothers must be!

What we ALL realize is that it is better to be a GREEK than not. But it is much easier to bash Greeks because of the few than to write about the good that we do.Remember in the real world, BAD NEWS IS GOOD NEWS to the readers. My chapter has done many DUMB things but they have also done many good deed that go unwriten as they are not really gripping news! We are a special group of people and still must try harder. If not for the Greeks then where are commitees and homecoming? DAT BE DA ? Well NO where. If all Greeks boycotted all school functions then where would the school be? Food for thought!

Well I just checked followers and got what a blow job. I tried to make a rebutal and it came out like I condoned this sort of thing. Beware of this site as they twist as most do who don't know our rituals and the feeling between members. While my fraternitt dose't condon hazing there may still be some chapters who do this and I know of fraternitys who still do. THIS IS WRONG and if I find anyone in my chapter who does they are OUT!

This movie has been publicized for well over a year now. The director or someone similar has been going around to all the Greek related forums all over the WWW, promoting it.

As Barbara said, this is old news. From what I understand (I haven't seen the film), it deals with a lot of racial issues and just uses the fraternity world to dump them on.

I have been to that website before - but lately it has been sounding like "Dear Penthouse, I never thought this would happen to me...." Describing spankings and such with a tad too much relish. Ewwww.

We have to remember that this movie only targets the negative of greekdom. But the post that I have read are quite questionable. Everyone is out to make a buck at any expense. Just remember this movie does not portray any of the organizations that I know of.

whew! I am so glad that this is thing is old news. I'd never seen it before, and there appeared to be lots of new posts. I doubt it will get national release, after having looked more through the site...
