How to access Fraternal News...

Since John (site administrator) has asked us not to post copyrighted information, here is a link to Fraternal News. You can learn there how to subscribe to the listserv if you want to:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fraternalnews/

Forum Mods: it might make sense to "stick" this to the top of the forum for a while. Your call.

Thanks,

Question

DeltaAlum,

question, if it is put out on the Internet, and I am sure we are getting the same thing, is it a need to worry about copy right! Just where as We know are they getting this information. They are reporting the news just as we are.

He/She/They are posting things from the National Media per se which means it is open for interpretation. Am I correct?

Is there a need to put an astric (*) and a disclaimer or a foot note?

Just wondering????

You are more on top of this than I am!

But if it becomes common knowledge??

Hey Tom,

It is still a problem, because presumably, whatever web page is posting these stories has permission from the original author.

I watch these things with careful interest

I watch these things with careful interest, and I have never seen any action taken or threatened concerning reposting stuff from one spot to another, like posting a newspaper story here in GC.

Sure, XYZ newspaper would prefer that you post a link to their site (rather than copy and post the article), since if you visit their site you help their visitor counts and maybe see/visit/buy their advertisiers. Some even have "warnings" on their sites.

But to be practical, if an item (story) is available on their site free, and someone posts it to GC or some other free site, who is hurt (damaged). What damages could they claim in court? If they have little or nothing to sue for, the possibility of a suit is about zero. No money? No lawyer is interested.

If any newspaper was taking action against free re-posters, it would be widely publicized by other newspapers, I'm sure.

Two sites I watch for funny stuff are www.badjocks.com and Obscurestore.com, and both of these actively seek donations from web surfers, and seek newspaper publicity, radio interviews, etc. Both also only post a link and about two sentences on any story - in part, I suppose, because they have assets and income.

I am, of course, an experienced and veteran ex-chapter house lawyer, so please do not consider this legal advice, or if you do - send me some cash.

Hoosier,

I agree with you. On the other hand, nobody who was into music file sharing ever saw anyone get into trouble until the RIAA decided to play hardball.

Anyway, since John is the site administrator, I will try to honor his requests to obey the copyright laws on this.

Re: I watch these things with careful interest

The free articles are usually not too detailed but anyway their costs are supported through advertisements, market data collection, etc. If you post an article on here then the paper loses income from that. That's one reason.

Yes you should be able to receive it just fine Little E. All you'd need to do to receive emails from that mailing list to your house account is subscribe from there by sending a blank email from the
account to: fraternalnews-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

You'd then receive individual emails (to receive only one combined 'digest' message per day you could then send a blank email to fraternalnews-digest@yahoogroups.com (or fraternalnews-normal@yahoogroups.com to switch back again )

You wouldn't need a Yahoo account or Yahoo profile, no. All it would allow you to do if you set one up would be to allow you to use the webpage features of that group like the photos and files area. Since they're not used by the fraternalnews group, you needn't worry.

Hope that helps.

I don't think the Fraternal News asks the nespapaers thast publish the articles or the authors themselves before the post. Mr XOMichelle was quite surprised to hear from all the people that had read his article on the Fraternal News.
